12 Reasons to Read the Her Campus Book

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CMU chapter.

If you love Her Campus as much as I do, or if you just want to survive and make the most out of your college experience, you’ll be happy to know that Her Campus has written a book. The Her Campus Guide to College Life: How to Manage Relationships, Stay Safe and Healthy, Handle Stress, and Have the Best Years of Your Life is something I definitely wish I had when I was starting college at CMU four years ago. This is by far the best college life preparation book I’ve seen, and believe me; I bought a few of those in my day. The book doesn’t just have great tips for freshmen, but there’s something every collegiette can learn. Here are 12 reasons to read The Her Campus Guide to College Life:

1. Stay Safe.

Nothing is more important than your safety in college. The Her Campus book has tips for protecting yourself whether you’re going out or studying late at night in Hunt.

2. Be Knowledgeable about Sexual Assault.

Unfortunately, sexual assault is constantly in the news and is becoming a huge issue on college campuses everywhere. The Her Campus book provides a lot of great information to supplement CMU’s many resources so that you can be knowledgeable in the event that you or a friend experiences sexual assault.

3. Study Abroad.

Thinking about studying abroad? The Her Campus book provides great tips to get you started looking at programs. Read this before heading to the CMU Study Abroad Office so that you aren’t overwhelmed by the rows of brochures.

4. Stay Healthy.

You can’t have a good college experience if you aren’t healthy. With the stresses of daily life at CMU, we tend to let our health take a backseat to our academics. Don’t let this happen to you. The Her Campus book has tips and advice on nutrition, fitness, eating disorders, sleep, avoiding illness, getting better when you are sick, drugs and alcohol, mental health (including stress and depression), and sexual health.

5. Learn How to Live with a Roommate.

Whether it’s freshman year and you’re getting a roommate for the first time or you’re moving in with someone new, the Her Campus book has tips for how to deal with one of the biggest issues in college. Make the most of your situation, and don’t let your roommate be the cause of a bad college experience.

6. Make the Most of Your Resources.

From professors and TAs to RAs, the Her Campus book has tips on utilizing these important resources. They are there to help you so why not take advantage?

7. Learn about Hooking Up and Dating.

Relationships just might be the most confusing aspect of college life. From friendships to hook ups to dating, the Her Campus book helps you navigate through this crazy time.

8. Get Involved on Campus.

Most CMU students are involved in some type of extracurricular activities, and many are involved in Greek Life. There’s nothing more important than finding your niche on campus, and along with the activities fair, the Her Campus book has great information about many of the clubs and organizations you’ll encounter on campus.

9. Manage Your Time.

As CMU students, many of us are overachievers, and we may find that we stretch ourselves a bit to thin at times. The Her Campus book has tips on how to manage your time and effectively study so that you can get more sleep, as well as tips on how to manage when you’ve taken on too much.

10. Make the Most of Social Media.

That photo of you at the frat party may not be the best thing for a possible employer to see (or your grandma for that matter). The Her Campus book has tips on how to keep your social media accounts clean, as well as how to use them effectively to find a job.

11. Manage Your Money.

The idea of a broke college student isn’t far from the truth at times. The Her Campus book provides tips about budgeting, making money, and financial aid. Don’t be that person mooching off of freshman DineX because you can’t afford to buy groceries or eat out.

12. Find a Job.

The biggest question we collegiettes get is what we are going to do after graduation. The Her Campus book has information to help you make the best of your job search. Supplement with a visit to your career counselor, and you’ll be clueless no more.
