How to Save Money in College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Clemson chapter.

One of the most important things we, as college students, should learn how to do is save money. Why? Because at some point we are going to have the responsibility of paying our own bills (if you don’t already) and we will have to decide what is worth spending money on.

The first way you can begin to save money is by counting the cost. What does that mean? It means if you have a bill coming up and your friends ask you to take a trip, which one is more important? The bill, obviously. Counting the cost means weighing the consequences of what you should and should not spend money on.

The second way you can save money is by buying off brand items from the grocery store. I know, it’s sad, right? But think about how much more money you have to splurge with if you buy off brand toilet paper, which works just as well, rather than Charmin!

The third way you can save money is by keeping a budget notebook. Writing down the average amount you spend on bills, clothes, and food can be a real difference maker in managing the money you will have to spend versus the amount you will have left over. Also, it gives you a visual picture of how much money you have, have spent, and have saved.

If done the right way, you should start to see a trend with how much money you are saving versus spending and you will develop great habits for the future!

I am the type of person that will laugh in the middle of a silent room because of something that happened days ago!
