How to Look Like a Million Bucks at Formal (But Not For a Million Bucks)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Clemson chapter.

The most wonderful time of the year is approaching! Yes, formal season! So many organizations around Clemson are about to hold their annual formals for members. It’s such a fun time because who doesn’t love getting dressed up, taking pics with friends, and ~working it~ on the dance floor? Nobody, that’s who! Formal is fantastic, but there are definitely stresses that come with it as well. At least for me, I wanted to figure out how to look and feel my best, but also keep my bank account looking good and feeling its best. After being resourceful, shopping around, asking friends, and bringing some creativity into play, I think I’ve found some amazing ways to create an amazing formal look without breaking the bank!

Dresses and Shoes

1. Lulu’s

Lulu’s is an online women’s clothing brand. They have almost everything, not just dresses! However, dresses are really where they shine. They offer pages upon pages of formal-ready dresses for very reasonable prices. They’re SO cute and they definitely have something for every style and body type! Check it out here: https://www.lulus.com/

2. Tobi

Tobi is another online clothing website that has more than just dresses. However, their extensive dress options really knock it out of the park. These dresses are beautiful and stylish, as well as super inexpensive! Tobi offers 50% off storewide fairly often so, if you need a dress, try to order it on a day where they offer this discount! Take a look here: http://www.tobi.com/

3. Poshmark

Poshmark is my new obsession. It’s a website/app where you sell items you don’t want anymore, or buy clothes that other people are selling! You can search exactly what you want, whether it’s the brand, the color, or as specific as “purple spaghetti strap maxi dress” and you’ll probably find something like what you’re looking for. Everything is priced pretty reasonably and is in good condition. If you’re nervous to buy something from a service like this, because I know I was, it’s definitely legit! I recently bought a beautiful, red, velvet romper for a function I had and I loved it! Make an account here: https://poshmark.com/

Accessories

1. Entourage

Entourage, the little shop right downtown, might be my favorite place ever. Everything they have is under $42, and everything is also super cute. While I’ve bought a ton of clothes from Entourage, I really feel like their accessories is where they hit it out of the park. They have a wide selection of earrings, necklaces, and bracelets for all under $18. Their statement pieces are beautiful, especially if you want a pop of color or are a fellow lover of big earrings (I may have a few too many pairs, but it’s ok!). In addition to getting beautiful new jewelry, you’re also supporting a local business by shopping at Entourage! Check them out in Downtown Clemson, or here: https://www.entourageclothing.com/

2. Francesca’s

Francesca’s is an awesome little gift and accessory shop! I promise that you’ll have to refrain yourself from buying everything when you walk in, but you’ll absolutely be able to find exactly what you need! They have beautiful jewelry for very reasonable prices and it won’t disappoint! Take a look here: https://www.francescas.com/

3. Charming Charlie

Charming Charlie is another accessory and gift shop, similar to Francesca’s. They have trendy and stylish pieces that can complete any formal look and not break the bank. In addition to their jewelry, I’m also a big fan of their bags/clutches! Absolutely worth looking at: http://www.charmingcharlie.com/

Hair and Makeup

1. Do Your Own or Ask a Friend!

If you’re like me and don’t know anything about makeup, now is the best time to reach out to a friend who’s a pro! I have a few friends that know what they’re doing and absolutely love to do other people’s makeup. So if you know someone, just ask! I’m sure they’d love to do it for you! If you’re skilled, unlike me, do your own! You can make it look exactly how you want and take your time on it. Same goes for hair!

2. Drug Store Makeup/Hair Tools

Whether you’re doing it yourself or having a friend do it, you might need some new products. Sephora is fantastic, don’t get me wrong, but our bank accounts might not be able to sponsor all the new Kylie lip kits and Fenty Beauty concealers (even though they’re so beautiful). Stores like CVS, Rite Aid, or Walgreens are the way to go. The extensive makeup selections allow you to find everything you need for a good price. Brands like e.l.f., Maybelline, and CoverGirl make some amazing products. Whether you need something to use every day, like concealer or blush, or something you might use just for formal like a specific lipstick or eyeshadow, the drug store is the way to go. These stores also have flat irons and curling irons if you’re in need of a new styling tool for the perfect hair-do!
