Holiday Gift Guide on a Budget

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Clemson chapter.

Christmas is back again! You know, the time of year where you remember you have an obligation to buy your friends something that you desperately hope they will enjoy. With that said, you’re broke as a joke and honestly, wouldn’t they understand if you didn’t? Wishful thinking. A self-admittedly old fashioned girl, as I sit here addressing my Grumpy Cat Christmas cards, I affirm that we should make an effort to give our friends and families gifts, if nothing else to show them we appreciate their presence in our lives. To make things a little easier for you, I have compiled a list of relatively cheap gift ideas for the lovely people in your life, from your parents, to quirky girlfriends, and the guy(s) in your life. And yes, I realize there are only 9 days left until Christmas, but finals took a tool on your gifting guru, alright?!

Mom & Dad

Ahh, the ‘rents. Whatever your family situation, any parent can appreciate a humorous gift. My personal favorite for this season is the book compilation of horrible and hilarious attempts to text by parents who are new to technology – When Parents Text. ($9)

The Wild One

If you have a Twitter and are a female, do us all a favor and follow @VodkaVendettas. Now. Done? Good. These two witty ladies also just happen to sell koozies and flasks. The flasks are 20 dollars, which is just bordering budget busting, but the koozies are much more feasible. Speaking of koozies, Lilly Pulitzer brand koozies are always a good idea, too. ($3-5)

*Hint – if you like VV’s Facebook page, you can get 15% off a flask, too!

The One Who Loves Food (otherwise known as Me)

Recipe Mason Jars. Head over to Michael’s, get yourself a couple of mason jars, and start looking up recipes. Take Chai cupcakes, for example. Put a layer of flour at the bottom of the jar, then sugar, then baking powder, so on and so on. Keep wet ingredients out and craft your own instructions to attach. Use twine to tie on a candy cane and you’re done! Your foodie friend will appreciate the presentation and love making what you gave. (1 set of 12 jars costs $10, and the ingredients’ cost will vary)

Type A

Assuming your total Type A friend loves cute patterns and monograms, try giving her an alternative to the typical Lilly notebook – Maybooks. It’s about the same price, including shipping, and it’s customizable. The school agendas add $3 to the price, so a good option would be to give the simple lined notebook, which I personally use for my daily to-do lists and random notes to myself. To boot, there are a ton of patterns on sale right now! ($18-23, maybooks.com)

Susie Homemaker

Homemade ornaments! Even though these are only seasonally appropriate once a year, they can be reused forever. I’ve seen a few ornament DIYs floating around pinterest, some using plastic ball ornaments, others using scrabble pieces. The options are endless, cheap, and she’ll love it. (Anywhere from $1 to $10, depending on what supplies you already own!)

Guy Friends

Waffle House gift certificates. Done. They will remember this next time they go at 3 AM and you’ll probably get a horribly penned text thanking you for it. ($5)

Boyfriend

A well-decorated man bouquet can make any guy’s day. If he’s of legal age, I suggest a man bouquet made of mini bottles – get a beer glass, use his favorite kinds of liquor, glue them to dowels, fill the space with tinsel, and wrap with some bows! Mini bottles will run you between $1-2 each, and the beer glass could be bought from the dollar store. (up to $15)
