A graduating senior’s advice to underclassmen

Dear undergraduates,

It’s a tad too late for me to partake in some of these adventures. I will be graduating in May and feel as if I have missed out on some important college experiences! College will go by SUPER fast. Don’t waste the NUMEROUS opportunities that college offers; it won’t be the same once you graduate!

  • Have some sort of meal plan at least 1 year after freshman year. You may think the food is iffy now; but I promise you will miss it! And don’t forget to take your to-go box every time to get your money’s worth!

  • Play an intramural sport. Almost all sports are offered so you are bound to enjoy one of them! You will make friends, feel belongingness, get your exercise, and have fun! This may even improve your academic performance because exercise helps you relieve stress, release endorphins, and feel more lively.

  • Join a club AND stick with it! Rather it be a sorority/fraternity, Habitat for Humanity, or student Government! I joined a few, but did not stay in them for long. Don’t regret this like me!

  • Get a part-time job, volunteer, or intern! It will look good on your resume and increase your chances of landing a job after graduating. (Hate to break it to you, jobs aren’t promised after graduating!)

  • Have a particular job in mind that you wish to attain with your education. Know all of the steps you need to take in order to land the position! If it requires grad-school, make sure to keep your grades up! I’m about to graduate and am clueless of what I can do with my major!

  • Don’t invest all of your time into a relationship. You have the rest of your life for that! Opportunities like these aren’t as easy to find in the “real world!”

  • Living on campus one year after freshmen year may be worthwhile. I moved 10 minutes out right after freshmen year and felt completely isolated! It’ll be easier to attend on-campus events and just enjoy everything the campus has to offer.

  • Use the gym- you are already paying for it in your tuition. Not only is there numerous workout equipment, but also classes, racquetball, rock-climbing, etc.

Oh yeah, and study some too!

Love, your graduating senior!
