Fad Diets – Should you try one?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Clemson chapter.

Have you always wondered what fad diets are, or if they are even successful?  I looked into them and the editors at Elle Magazine have all tried one!  Which I will you try?

Baby Food Diet:  You might be wondering is this even real?  Well apparently if you eat two jars of baby food instead of breakfast and lunch and then follow up with a healthy dinner you can lose about 5 pounds in a week.  Pureed is definitely not the healthiest: can give you too much sugar and make you moody.

Blood-Type Diet: This is an interesting concept that based on your blood type, there is a specific diet that works best for you.  For example, Type As should try vegetarianism and Type Os can have meat but not dairy!

The Clean Program: I’ve always been wary about juice detoxes.  This one lasts for 21 days and you have two liquid meals (such as smoothies) a day along with a healthy lunch!  Apparently Gwyneth Paltrow is a fan of this one.

The French Woman Diet: This one is interesting – it includes having sit down rich meals and no packaged foods and drinking wine!  It is not the most effective for weight loss, though.

Paleo Diet:  This one is actually fairly popular.  I’ve heard of some students at Clemson using it.  You eat anything you could as a hunter-gatherer back in the day, which is a fun concept (i.e. lamb, poultry, bison).

The Karl Lagerfeld Diet: This diet has three different parts.  It starts with 900 calories a day for two weeks, then ups to 1200 for one week, and ends with maintenance at 1600.  Dieters have lost weight and had clearer skin, but been especially hungry as I’m sure you can imagine!  I’d starve on this one.

The Pil-Sook Diet: This one has been made popular from a television show in South Korea, believe it or not.  You eat less each meal of the day – “eat breakfast like a queen, lunch like a commoner, dinner like a pauper.”  Did I forget to mention there are 30-minute jump roping sessions every day?  Yikes.

Maybe a fad diet isn’t for you!  Some general tips for staying healthy in your teens and twenties are eating smaller portions more often, eating at the same mealtime every day, avoiding carbonated drinks, and treating yourself every now and then!  That’s always good to hear…so stay healthy but totally have that chocolate bar you’re eyeing!
