Beauty Tips: College Girl on a Budget (What Products to Get)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Clemson chapter.

By this time in the school year, we all know that college teaches us much more than just academics. In the past two months, I’ve learned that 8 A.M. in high school is equivalent to approximately 5 A.M. in college, a C on a biology exam can make you feel like a Medical school graduate, and most importantly, a $40.00 weekly budget does not buy half as much as you think it will. This means prioritizing what is absolutely essential for survival and what can wait until a trip home is made so that you can beg your parents to take you shopping. At the top of my essentials list is beauty products. Since I am averaging about 5 hours of sleep a night, I normally do not wake up looking like Kate Upton (if only!). So when I go to get beauty supplies, I have to make sure I am getting the right products at great prices.

For the purple half-circles under my eyes that have decided to make themselves at home, I have been using Rimmel London Hide the Blemish Concealer, which I purchased for under $5. I apply it right to the area underneath my eyes and on my eyelids as soon as I get out of the shower so that it can soak into my clean skin, and after about half a minute, I rub it in. It does not completely eliminate my circles, but it makes them barely noticeable.

My newest obsession is Rimmel London’s Scandal Eyes Curve Alert mascara. I have tried literally every brand and type of mascara drug stores have to offer, and for me, they have all worked to the same extent: my lashes look a little longer and darker. This mascara, however, actually does what it says it will. My eyelashes look twice the size they did compared to my precious mascara, and they feel light and full. The best part about this mascara? It only costs $5.50! I think I have finally found the one (speaking in terms of the perfect mascara, of course).

Lastly, no one is completely ready for a day of classes and night on the town without some fantastic hairspray. Suave Professionals Touchable Finish, which costs $2.88 at Wal-Mart, maintains style while also maintaining the natural body and flow of hair. I have very thick hair (I have broken multiple brushes and countless hair ties trying to tame it), and it keeps my hair looking volumized and natural throughout the entire day. Another perk is that it smells amazing! I have had three girls walk up to me in the past two days and ask what product I had put in my hair that made it smell so nice.

So even though most of us cannot afford to hit the salon every other week, we can make some great buys that will keep us looking fabulous. For just under $15.00, I have found products that keep me looking fresh and alert, even throughout my three hour labs on Wednesday and Thursday nights. At least now there is one part of college I have figured out, and as for the other issues we are all facing, I will keep you all updated on what I discover!
