7 Ways to Spend Saturdays in the Spring

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Clemson chapter.

Just like Friar’s income any weekend outside of football season, we feel a little empty without Saturdays of tailgating, cadence counts, and endless Wooooo-hooing! But there is a truth we all must face every year, the reality of an entire semester without any Clemson football. Fear not, because there are so many great ways to fill your time and enrich your Clemson experience. Here are just seven of them.

1. Baseball at Doug Kingsmore Stadium

The tailgating may not be as boisterous as during football season, but that doesn’t mean it’s not as enjoyable. There are so many tents to visit, most of them with food, music, and plenty of your friends. Senior and equipment manager Christopher Coode told me our hard-working team plays best when stands are FULL, so do your best to cheer on those guys in their wonderful baseball pants!

2. So Much Room for Activities!

Clemson’s campus encourages physical activity, making getting fit easier than ever. 5Ks are an easy way to motivate yourself to train and are typically held on weekends, such as the upcoming Tigers for Tigers 5K on March 9th and the Easter Bunny Run benefitting March of Dimes Collegiate Council on March 30th. Other activities you can do on Saturday include Fike classes, like cycling, or attending CORE trips. These trips can take you backpacking, hiking, rock or mountain climbing, and even white water rafting. You have to register first! And if you’re more into shooting a shotgun than working it out on a mountain, try the DZ Charity Clay Classic coming up March 9th as well as many other Greek Organization philanthropies-make sure you check out http://on.fb.me/XHVogd for more information!

3. Show Off the Bikini Ready Body You’ve Been Working So Hard On…Right?

One of the best things about spring is that it comes before summer, because seriously, pollen sucks and there’s still class. Saturday already fixes half that problem! As it starts warming up, you can lay out by any of the student community pools around Clemson and Central, as well as Y Beach and the lake! Wakeboarding and cruising around on a boat are all great options, too. Senior Thomas Kuckhoff loves to go sailing when the weather permits.

4. Remember That “Land Grant University” Thing?

If it’s your cup of tea, you could go to any of many, frequent, regional 4H and Clemson Agricultural shows. The Clemson University Dairy Show, for example, is coming up soon at the T. Ed. Garrison Arena! Clemson’s extension program offers many opportunities to learn about gardening, among other agricultural endeavors, which might just come in handy in your first home after graduation.

5.  Other Clemson Sports

Nothing like checking out a Basketball game right here on campus. And Women’s Rowing! If the fact that some of our rowing women got first place in the 2012 ACC championship doesn’t sway you, you’ll never be convinced. The next women’s rowing meet is March 9th against Duke and Eastern Michigan, and meets are usually on Saturdays!

6. Performing Arts

Clemson students love the arts, including music and theater. Currently, the Clemson Players are preparing for their running of Medea, which will be showing starting on February 28th, including a Saturday show!

7. Last, but Definitely not Least – “Sloth Saturdays”

Because who doesn’t want to roll out of bed at noon, watch movies all day with your friends, and only leave the house once for Wendy’s? (Fact: I’ve done this. It’s amazing).

Honorable Mention

Senior Jim Duessel shared my sentiments when he said spring means no longer “having to wake up for 8 am tailgates.” Spring is clearly for sleeping in. My kitten would agree.
