Game of Thrones Review- Full SPOILERS
Episode 1: “Winterfell”
Score: 8/10
Does it pass the Bechdel? Yes. Dany and Sansa had a very brief conversation. Though the two strongest female characters being immediately pitted against eachother is still less than ideal.
Sexy-lamp test? Passed with flying colors! (Except maybe Bronn and the prostitutes).
TBH: I rewrote that score a couple times and may come back and correct this article based on how the story threads that they started here play out throughout this season. I really appreciated that they got a bunch of the things that the fans really wanted to see out of the way (i.e. John riding the dragon, John and Arya’s reunion, John finding out his heritage, Arya and Gendry meeting up, Bronn, just Bronn). I thought all of the revelations and reunions were really great. I was particularly surprised and impressed with Sam finding out about his father and his brother and then ending with Bronn seeing Jamie.
In terms of the more artsy elements, I really thought that the new intro animation was beautiful. I also thought that the cinematography in the crypt was beautiful. The way that the angle shifted so that it started with Ned’s statue behind John and then pivoted so that it was Lyanna’s statue behind him was so well done and made me so happy.
