Things to Remember When Going Back to College After Winter Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Clarion chapter.

No one likes going back to school after a nice break. At first maybe people do because it gets you away from your overbearing family but in reality, going back to school is the ultimate horror. I am one of those people. I do not like coming back to school especially after a past rough semester, or even a past rough year. When people come back to school they complain how they really messed up their sleep schedule or how now they have to start studying again. Everyone is different when they come back from break even if it is just a small change. I want to give a couple things to remember when going back to college after winter break.

  1. You are not the only one

Listen when people talk to you. Yes, you might hear the same thing from someone else. Like, my sleep schedule is messed up, but some people just want others to listen. To those people who want to say that their sleep schedule is messed up take into consideration that the person you are talking to is in the same boat as you. You are not the only one that stayed up until later or worked late and then slept in until way past noon.

  1. If you want that degree, you have to study

If you complain about studying, it’s like a broken tip of a pencil, pointless. (Haha. Sorry for that terrible joke.)  If you take the time to complain about studying, then you have less time to study. You are just making it harder for yourself and the only thing that will be hurt is your grades.

  1. Go for it

Did you want to join a club last semester but thought you did not have time? Well try and make some time for it this semester. Did you want to join Greek Life but didn’t know if you would fit in or weren’t allowed to yet? Go through recruitment. Did you want to try and graduate a semester but in order to do that you would have to take more credits? If you think you can do it go for it. The only thing that is stopping you is yourself. Do not let anyone tell you that you should not do something.

  1. Say no

The reason I say is that once the semester starts rolling you may not have time to do everything. Make sure you have time to do homework, have some along time, and even get lunch with your friends if that’s the only time you can see them. Don’t always say yes to every obligation that crosses your path if you know you have a big test coming up say no.

  1. The past semester does not define who you are

A friend said something to me recently that kind of hit home. It was along the lines of that last semester is in the past and that you should not worry about it anymore. To anyone that has had a rough past semester or past year do not let that affect your current semester. So, what your grades were not perfect, or you got into a fight with a friend or you felt like your world was falling apart. Guess what, that does not define you as a person. Last semester or last year is not the end of the world, it’s the beginning of realizing that maybe something needs to change.
