Sexual Assault Awareness Month: Let’s Educate Ourselves

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Clarion chapter.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month aka the perfect time to take initiative to inform yourself about this very important topic. Sexual Assault is something that can make people extremely uncomfortable when it is brought up. Why? It shouldn’t be difficult to talk about. It shouldn’t be something that people shy away from in everyday conversation. No, it isn’t a topic that people wish to linger on for long but it is a problem that we all must address. The whole mission behind Sexual Awareness Month is to bring the issue to attention and relay information concerning the issue. Below is a very informative video explaining what sexual assault is, how to take precautions and preventative measures, what to do if a sexual assault occurs, and policies in place to help those who have been assaulted.

After watching the video, how do you feel? Do these seem like good strategies to help prevent future incidents? Has your University ever shown something like this to students? If not, and you feel up to the challenge, you can start your own Sexual Assault Awareness Campaign at your school. Using this link, you can explore the National Sexual Violence Resource Center’s website where you will find tools you can use to help raise awareness at your school, in your community, and among friends and family. You can even download the organization’s kit that gives you everything needed to begin your very own campaign. The Action kit includes ideas for workshops and information sessions, social media outreach tools, and even cool gear you can wear to emphasize your message about sexual assault. This month, you can take it upon yourself to spread the word about sexual assault, its effects, and how to prevent it. #SAAM
