“Ladies and gents, this is the moment you’ve waited for.” The first line of this movie says it all, but let’s break it down. The Greatest Showman earned $19 million over its six-day opening alone and has since risen to $236.3 million in box office sales. The songs are spreading all over the internet as fans of the new feature film admit shamelessly that they have gone to see the movie several times, some even going as many as five times. What is it about this movie that makes it so popular and worthwhile? As someone who would be more than willing to see the film a second time, I may have an idea.

The plot is creative and innovative in nature. It is about a dreamer who goes by the name P.T. Barnum. He goes from a poor boy with a wild imagination, to the man who invented show business by bringing his imagination to life. Before you know it, you are seeing unique characters coming together under the lights of a circus. Barnum is challenged to either continue to chase fame, fortune and recognition, or realize that small moments with his family are what make life magical. There is so much inspiration woven throughout as well. The crew that make up the circus are a band of misfits who have been out-casted by society for being different. Whether they are too short, hairy, tall or fat, no one will accept them for who they are. Barnum can unite them and show people that they are worth love and that they are talented.

Now let’s talk music. Even before seeing the movie I was hooked on the soundtrack, having heard bits and pieces of it on YouTube. If you love musicals, Broadway or even just catchy tunes, you can’t go wrong with this movie. The lyrics to each song are extremely meaningful and well written. One of their stamp songs is titled “This is me,” and is all about empowerment in the face of fear and doubt. Keala Settle, with a background in Broadway performances, stole this song with her powerful belt. “Never Enough” is another deep, meaningful song that gives you chills as you listen to the vocalist’s range stretch. Other song such as “The Greatest Show,” “Come Alive” and “The Other Side” are all upbeat songs that make you want to tap your feet and groove along. Did I just say groove? Yes, I did, friends. Yes, I did.

Now, I won’t say much more about this movie because, in general, I think you get how I feel about it. Two thumbs up from this girl. I recommend checking it out and seeing where a little imagination can take you.
