7 Books to Help Begin your Reading Journey

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Clarion chapter.

Reading is such an underrated activity. Sure, you like to read Her Campus and see all the new juicy details going on in shows like The Bachelor and The Real Housewives, but when was the last time you opened up a book and read it for fun?

Reading is an amazing way to get your entertainment because you get all of the drama of a TV show or movie featuring the own the images that you create. It may take a little time to do, but by the end of the tale, you will be hooked.

Without further ado, here are 7 Books to Help Begin your Reading Journey.

1.The Memory of Light by Francisco X. Stork

Coming from a picky reader, this book is AMAZING! Mental illness is a beast, but what happens when an unlikely group of friends try to help each other heal? If you’re down with potential water works, I highly suggest reading this book.

2. Belief is its Own Kind of Truth, Maybe by Lori Jakiela

I already know what you’re thinking – a memoir, really? Yes, really. Jakiela’s voice is amazing, and if you’re looking to get into creative non-fiction, her book is a great place to start.

3. Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic by Allison Bechdel

This graphic memoir (yes, there are pictures!) is so good that they made it into a Broadway Musical. Enough said.

4. Fan Girl by Rainbow Powell

Admittedly, this book is one of my favorites.  If you are into coming of age stories about quirky people, this is your novel.

5. The Program by Suzanne Young

What happens when teen suicide becomes an international epidemic and the government steps in to stop it? If you enjoy dystopian stories like The Hunger Games, you most likely will like this book!

6. The Sound of Letting Go by Stasia Ward Kehoe

Being perfect is hard, especially when your family feels like it is falling apart, or at least that is how Daisy feels. This coming of age novel features a little bit of everything – romance, teen angst, family drama, people of varying abilities. What more could you ask for?

7. Salt to Sea by Ruta Sepetys

This is another tear jerker, but it is completely worth it! If you like historical fiction or if the Holocaust interest you, read this book! It offers multiple sides of the Holocaust narrative.
