Tired of Make-Up? 5 Reasons to Take Off Your Foundation

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at City London chapter.

One of the glorious rules of make-up is that a good base is essential. We all agree on that. Any smokey eyes or shocking lipsticks just do not work if your face doesn’t have that smooth, bright and flawless touch. As a result, the companion of our mornings is our beloved foundation (only after coffee, of course). Be it liquid, cream, mineral or powder, we are always loyal to it.

However, dear colleggiettes, although while doing your make-up that little beige bottle looks at you with such tempting eyes, sometimes it is better to just turn away and go out without it. Why?

  • ONE: The carrot-effect

If your foundation doesn’t match the natural colour of your skin, you may end up looking like City’s mascot, the carrot! It may have hidden all the blemishes, but with a redsish look, it might seem you have just walked out the wrong spa treatment. If you are still struggling to find a colour that matches your skin perfectly, just procrastinate the search for one more day and go bare for now!

  • TWO: Give it a breath! When you cover your face with make-up products, especially liquid and cream ones, they stick to it and don’t let either a breath of air in. As much soft and delicate it may seem, you still have something glued to your face and you are probably going to wear it for more than 8 hours a day. Afraid to let your skin breathe smog? Just use a moisturiser with a good SPF and you’ll be fine, and protected from UV and UVA as well.
  • THREE: The sunglasses tacticsIf you are going to the grocery store, you don’t need to spend time putting make-up on in the first place. Tomatoes and strawberries are not going to jump off your basket if you don’t eye-contact them. And if you don’t want the cashier guy to look at you either, just go for the self-scan. It is also unlikely that you are going to meet your charming prince among piles of clothes while shopping. Plus, you are probably going to spend a lot of time trying things on, so foundation would only make your face sweat.

  • FOUR: Save timeMornings are not slow girls’ best friends. I heard that once. Well, if you are among those people that need lots of time, you may have thought about waking up at least 2 hours before class starts… Just to be sure to be on time. If that is something you do regularly – together with going to bed after midnight – you may want to give yourself some rest by setting your alarm one hour later than usual. Unless you are going to meet the Queen or be on national television, you can survive today without wearing make-up!
  • FIVE: You just don’t need itWith all of uni hustle and bustle, sometimes we forget we are in our twenties. The teenage acne period is over and we have all understood if we have dry or oily skin. Exceptions given, you don’t really need a layer of beige product to cover your face. If you have a blemish you desperately want to hide, then just put some concealer on. Once a wise man told me: “If people can’t handle your morning face, they are not worth your day”. And believe me, he’s my personal Rafiki.
