CULSU Election 2014 Produces All-female Sabbatical Team

The Students’ Union at City University London saw three women elected as Sabbatical Officers for the first time ever in this 2014 election. Rima Amin, the first female president in 11 years, said in here victory speech: “Ladies, I’m looking forward to what we will do!”

Rima Amin was elected Student Union President after a very tight difference in the count of votes. Amin won with 1042 votes against Hassan Niazi who gathered 1027 votes.

Issy Cooke was declared Vice President Education with 920 votes while Natalia Rajapakse was elected as the Vice President Activities and Development with 781 votes. The 2014 elections also saw all of the SU positions fall to women except for the International Students’ Officer taken by Ahmed Rasool.

The election period saw candidates campaigning from the 17th to the 27th of February and culminated to the Results Show at the university’s student bar, Saddlers, on the eve of the 28th February Friday. Elected representatives for different groups and departments for the SU’s Executive positions were also announced during the event giving the full list of winning candidates below:

All elected officers will take up their posts on the 1st of  August while positions which did not received any nominations – including LGBT, Black and Minority and Disabled Students Officers – will be open again in a by-election on October.
