CitySports to Open Doors in February 2015

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at City London chapter.

City University’s new sports venue on Goswell Road will finally be unveiled on the 2nd February 2015.

The ex-Saddlers Sports Centre was closed in June 2011 and was supposed to re-open again with the beginning of the new academic year 2014/2015 under the new name ‘CitySport’. However, the facility has only now entered the final stages of its build and sports enthusiasts will have to wait a couple of more months before kicking it off.

Bill Thompson, Head of Sport and Leisure Services says, “The facility is massive, with over 100 fitness stations, a large 6 court Sport England standard sports hall with seating for up to 400 people, studios, separate team changing rooms and a friendly welcoming atmosphere.”

The heart of the building will be the Saddlers Sport Hall, an elite competition sports hall that will provide space for many activities, including basketball, badminton, football, volleyball, netball and other court games. Purpose-built studios will also be destined to groups exercised, martial arts, mind and body classes, spinning and student team sports.

In the meantime, the university will reveal its prices when pre-registration for memberships opens for students and staff in November.

In December, the sports team will offer the opportunity to attend preview sessions, a tour of the facility and a Q&A’s with the new staff, to see what CitySport is all about.

The facility aims to create more opportunities for students “to interact, socialise, and remain physically active, either as a member of a representational Sports Team, the gym, group exercise classes or trying a ‘taster session’ for a new Sport”, Thompson says. He continues: “University life is difficult. You need to find a balance between academics, socialising, and activity.”
