Celebrating the New Year isn’t just about kissing random strangers at midnight; it’s about reinvention. The one time of the year when everyone declares a promise of self-betterment. According to an article from YouGov, in 2026, Americans’ New Year’s Resolutions are to “exercise more, be happier, and eat healthier.” While these resolutions are not necessarily bad, they are often overwhelming.
The key to making a resolution last is not the act itself, but how you do it.
Keeping these five simple phrases in the back of your mind this year may be the perfect way to keep your goals realistic and achievable, whatever they may be.
1. Look Good, Feel Good
Yes, this is your sign to buy that GymShark set you’ve been dying to get your hands on. Sometimes, the small actions are exactly what’s needed to motivate you. As a college student, it’s easy to get into the routine of wearing the same sweatshirt for a week straight – trust me, I’ve been there. However, dedicating a day or two to switching up the usual wardrobe or hairdo may have a bigger impact on your productivity and overall mentality than you think.
It’s true confidence comes from within, but don’t underestimate the power of a cute outfit ;)
2. Nourish Your Body, Don’t Punish It
While it is helpful for some, it’s no secret that the restrictive lifestyle that comes with dieting can be harmful to one’s mental and physical health. This phrase emphasizes the importance of proper nourishment for your body, which prioritizes a clean and balanced lifestyle. Since time and money can be tight in college, I recommend checking out BudgetBytes and The Clean Eating Couple for some simple recipes that are both affordable and nutritious!
Remember – what works for others may not work for you, and that’s ok.
3. Chase Progress, Not Perfection
From one perfectionist to another, we cannot keep living like this. Our inner critic can be relentless at times; however, this phrase can help you stay grounded and fight the urge to perfect things out of your control. And as a reminder, progress looks different for everyone. It may look like improving a grade in a class, running a mile without stopping, or even saving a small amount of money each week. This year, I encourage you to give yourself grace and strive for baby steps.
Don’t let self-deprecation hold you back from reaching your greatest potential.
4. Let Go of Judgment, Embrace Tolerance
In other words, avoid yucking someones yum. Even if it is not verbalized, subconscious judgments towards others and ourselves can often imbalance our internal peace. Along with a potential disruption of personal growth. This year, challenge yourself to acknowledge your dislikes and choose tolerance. So next time you see a cybertruck or a labubu, remember that our personal preferences are what make us unique and are what form community.
Acceptance is foundational to flourishing.
5. Build Your Life, Don’t Just Live It
This phrase is from a speech given by Ashton Kutcher during the 2013 Teen Choice Awards. During his speech, Kutcher stated this phrase as one of his three keys to a successful life. There is a vast difference between designing a life for others and designing a life for you. Manifestation may be the first step, but without effort, life will simply pass by.
Stay true to your values, and let them guide you.
