Five Reasons Why Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” Should Be Your New Favorite Show

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cincinnati chapter.

1. Midge Maisel Herself

The star of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” is one of the funniest and boldest main characters on television right now. She decided to start performing stand-up comedy one night after her husband leaves her. Midge is raw and honest, while simultaneously being witty and funny. She has awesome outfits and is played by the amazing Rachel Brosnahan, who has won two Golden Globes as well as a Primetime Emmy Award for her performance as Midge.

2. Midge’s Parents, Rose and Abe

Rose and Abe Weissman played by Marin Hinkle and Tony Shalhoub, respectively, are two very Jewish and very three-dimensional characters. They think independently of each other (and of their daughter, Midge), not to mention they’re hilarious, and, while they care for Midge deeply, they also try to teach her how to be able to be strong and (somewhat) independent after she’s unexpectedly single.

3. The Writing

The show, created by Gilmore Girl’s Amy Sherman-Palladino, is funny and serious, much like the star Midge Maisel herself. It has very funny as well as very lighthearted moments. Susie Myerson, who works at the comedy club Midge frequents, as well as Abe, Rose and Midge, have some of the best jokes throughout the series.

4. The Costumes

Since the show is set in 1950s New York, every character has great, whimsical costumes. Midge, especially, wears colorful dresses with equally colorful coats to match. The costumes are memorable without even trying.

5. The Setting

As mentioned above, the show is set mostly in New York in the 1950s, featuring comedy and family pretty prominently in the series. The setting adds another layer to this show and helps to emphasize the idea that anything can be possible! Even following your comedy dreams.
