Today is National Pet Day, April 11th! This holiday is all about appreciating, loving and celebrating the wonderful pets that you have in your life. National Pet Day was founded by Celebrity Pet Lifestyle Expert & Animal Welfare Advocate, Colleen Paige, and is sponsored by the Animal Miracle Foundation & Network to raise awareness about the importance of pet adoption. This holiday actually has it’s own motto: “Don’t shop! Adopt.”

Out of all the pets in United States approximately 86.4 million are cats and 78.2 million are dogs, along with gerbils, birds, turtle and fish being very common as well. Personally, I am one of the 86.4 million people who have a cat, and I am also one of the 78.2 million who has a dog- but in the past I have also had a pet snapping turtle, a rooster, rabbits and last but not least pigs. And I loved and considered every single one of them a part of my family. If you consider your pet to be a member of the family, you are by no means alone- 6 out of 10 owners feel the same way.

To celebrate National Pet Day, take your dog on a long walk or give your cat a little extra catnip to show your love and appreciation towards them. And if you’re not currently a pet owner consider volunteering at your local pet shelter or humane society.
