Even five minute oral reports can leave you feeling shaky. We asked three HC Chatham team members for their quick tips to make public speaking a little less intimidating.

Stay calm and be focused!

Catherine Giles, Sustainability Writer

When I speak in public, I always remember that I have probably rehearsed this piece at least 100 times, and that giving a speech is kind of like acting; nobody knows if you screw up unless you let them know. If you mess up a few words, go with it! The only person that will know is whoever has the copy of your speech, and you.

Shannon Ward, News/Lifestyle Writer

A surefire way to lower the stress of public speaking is to appear at ease in front of your audience, even if you feel nervous. I always try to break the ice with a joke (when appropriate) or a smile. It is intimidating to stand in front of a group of people who are focusing intently on you and everything you say, but they’re just normal people, too. More often than not, they’re more than willing to connect and respond encouragingly if you reach out to them.
