Looking for some high-energy songs to splash up your summer, but tired of reading through webpages that only mention Katy Perry and The Beach Boys? Just check out this original Her Campus Chatham playlist, and blast your favorite songs through those speakers!
10. “Somebody That I Used to Know” by Darren Criss and Matt Bomer
For many, summer romance and the aftermath of a spring breakup are as important to the season as beach balls and sunscreen. What better way to heal from the old wounds and celebrate your newfound strength than with this hit, originally sung by breakthrough band Gotye?
9. Â “Bulletproof” by La Roux
Forget those haters, let loose, and hang out! An electropop song reminiscent of P!nk’s “Raise Your Glass,” this 2009 tune is more than worth a few plays as you soak up the sun or strap on those goggles to go swimming.Â
8. “Uncharted” by Sara Bareilles
A sequel to song #10 on our list, this beautiful song by pop princess Sara Bareilles is all about taking chances. Try out a new dish, take that road trip you’ve been dreaming about, or spend some time with that special someone you’ve had your eye on! Whatever you do, have a summer worth remembering.
7. “Dark Side” by Kelly Clarkson
Summer is all about new experiences. But we can’t forget about those good friends who stick with us all year round! Through the ups and downs, each Chatham girl knows that her fellow Cougars have been there for her every step of the way. Here’s to you, friends! You know who you are.
6. “Outta My Head” by Daughtry
We at Her Campus Chatham suspect some serious subliminal messaging on this one. Chris Daughtry goes Adam Lambert with this explosive single, and – just as he hoped – it is impossible to get out of our heads! Listen to it just once, and we promise you’ll be replaying it all summer long…
5. “Shake It Out” by Florence + The Machine
“It’s always darkest before the dawn.” Now that winter has finally ended, we can enjoy the warm weather and abandon the stress of final exams! Take a deep breath, and ‘shake it out.’
4. “She’s So Mean” by Matchbox Twenty
Only released last month, this brand new song was recorded by beloved rock band, Matchbox Twenty. What Maroon 5’s “Misery” was to 2011, “She’s So Mean” will no doubt be to summer 2012!
3. “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen
With its breathy vocals, steady backbeats, and summer-centric lyrics (“Hot night, wind was blowin'”), there’s no better song to play this season. Okay, okay. So maybe you’ve heard it one too many times, but how can you help yourself from singing along? Want to listen to it one more time? Just press play.
2. “Feel Like a Rockstar” by Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney
Perhaps the most underrated song of 2012, the tune has all the elements of a great summer hit: killer electric guitar, worry-free lyrics, and an unforgettable collaboration between two of country music’s biggest stars. The highlight for many of the standout Brothers of the Sun tour (HC Chatham review coming soon!), the song is a must for any summer playlist.
1. “We Are Young” by Fun
It’s a fine testament to this song that at the Brothers of the Sun tour performance at Pittsburgh’s own Heinz Field, everyone in the audience started to sing along when it was played over the stage speakers during an intermission. A rock hit that harkens back to the sounds of the 80s arena and speaks to the hearts of the young and young at heart, it is a “Smells Like Teen Spirit” for the new decade.
