5 Great Things to Watch on Netflix This Fall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chatham chapter.

Autumn, in my opinion, is the best time of the year to curl up with a blanket, watch copious amounts of Netflix, and procrastinate on your responsibilities. Here’s a fall-themed list of 5 movies and TV shows that will help you achieve just that, with a mix of comedy, drama, and darkness.

  1. Stranger Things

Stranger Things is a Netflix original series about a group of witty young tweens investigating the mysterious disappearance of their friend. Along the way, they encounter a girl with psychokinetic powers, a mad scientist, an unearthly evil force, and lots of Eggo waffles. The spooky story takes place in November, making it ideal for the fall season. There are only eight one-hour episodes, meaning that it can be binge-watched all in one day, if you’re feeling lazy enough.

2. Dead Poets Society

This classic film centers around the eccentric teachings of Robin William’s character at an all-boys prep school in fall 1959. He teaches them to question authority, stay true to themselves, and live extraordinary lives. Dead Poets Society is great if you’re looking for a moving, yet tear jerking movie with some cute boys sprinkled in. It perfectly captures that fall aesthetic of sweaters and sadness.

3. The Sixth Sense

The Sixth Sense tells the story of a troubled psychologist (Bruce Willis) who meets a disturbed young patient with a shocking secret. You’ll be on your toes until the very end, which contains a twist that’s surprisingly hard to see coming. It’s scary-but-not-too-scary, and surprisingly touching at the conclusion.

4. Heathers

Heathers, in essence, is a cheesy 80’s movie, but it is also so much more than that. Winona Ryder (who also has a role in the first item on this list, Stranger Things) plays the character of Veronica Sawyer, a high schooler who gets tangled up with a clique, a bad boy, and a murder. Dark comedy and late 80s fashion make this movie a winner. Honestly, it contains too much plaid to not be a fall film.

5. Donnie Darko

Not only is this my favorite movie ever, but it is also hands-down the most perfect fall film on this list. Donnie Darko is a troubled teen who experiences terrifying hallucinations about a man in a bunny suit and the end of the world. The sci-fi flick has it all—humor, thrills, romance, and time travel. Young Jake Gyllenhaal doesn’t hurt, either.

Take a break from homework sometime and unwind with a bit of Netflix to get you even further into the fall spirit!
