10 Pittsburgh Apps You Didn’t Know You Needed

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chatham chapter.

Sure, you have apps to track the weather or give you directions, but do you have an app that lets you order Smiley Cookies from your phone?

1. Eat ‘n Park

Even if you only go to Eat ‘n Park once each semester, this app is worth downloading. Instead of sticking to the printed-coupon system, the restaurant now offers digital versions you can redeem from your phone. The app offers a location finder, a feedback form, a full menu and a “Call to Order” button to streamline the takeout process.

2. Pittsburgh Hockey Alarm

If you’re a dedicated member of the Student Rush line, this app will keep the next game fresh in your mind. The simple interface counts down to the next Penguins game, then alerts you when it’s about to begin. Don’t miss a goal ever again!

3. Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh

Our love affair with CLP went digital. Download this app to easily access a searchable catalog from your phone. Need to manage your account? Instead of waiting in line at the front desk, renew books and request materials from your smartphone. The app includes hours, locations and events calendars for all of CLP’s branches, and it even lets you turn your phone into an eReader for their enormous online collection. Our favorite feature: a barcode scanner lets you photograph the ISBN on any book to automatically search the library catalog for it.

4. Yinztagram

Want to take a selfie with Rick Sebak? This may be as close as you get. Yinztagram lets you add ‘Burgh-themed stickers to your photos, from a Primanti’s sandwich to Dippy the Dinosaur.

5. PGHFireworks

From late spring to mid-fall, fireworks dominate the Pittsburgh skyline (and soundscape). Never miss another display with this app from WPXI. Discover upcoming shows, then post your fireworks photos in the community gallery.

6. ParkPGH

Parking in Pittsburgh can feel mildly overwhelming. ParkPGH gives you the tools to avoid crowds and find the perfect spot every time. Tell the app where you’re going to find out which lots are open. Already know where you want to park? The app lets you select any garage to find out hours, rates, and how many spots are open. It’ll even give you a map to get there!

7. Primanti Bros.

The Primanti’s app makes it easier than ever to take a bite out of Pittsburgh’s iconic sandwiches. Check the app for locations, happenings, and social chatter. Want to write a love letter to the makers of French-fry-filled happiness? Use the feedback form.

8. Tiramisu

Tired of waiting for a bus in a blizzard? CMU can help. Their new app is designed to estimate the arrival time of your bus based on GPS tracking and history. The coolest part: Tiramisu is an in-progress research project, and they need your help to make it successful! By giving them permission to track you during your trip, you’ll help other riders catch the bus on time.

9. Burgh.ly

Need something to eat, drink or do? Burgh.ly’s your bestie. Browse goings-on in the city, or search by neighborhood to find out what’s happening nearby. No more aimless wandering on a Friday night!

10. Carnegie Museum of Art

This app helps you plan your visit, catch up on museum news, watch behind-the-scenes videos and find out which must-see exhibits you need to explore in person.
