It may seem as if it were hardly here, but in the race of the seasons, summer has sadly fallen behind us. So, what changes when autumn rounds the corner? Pumpkin spice lattes grace the menu of nearly every coffee shop. A bin of plump orange pumpkins sits outside your local grocery store. Halloween costumes and an infinite number of candy bags overflow the end-caps of store aisles. It’s easy to get lost in the seasonal hype, but one thing is for certain: one of the best changes that comes with the turning of the leaves is an opportunity to revamp your daily makeup.
Summer is a great season for lightweight BB creams and a few whisps of mascara. Amongst all of the sun shining down, the sheerness of BB formulas won’t divulge any visible texture. Due to their water-based formulas, BB creams also appear very wet or dewy on the skin. The overall appearance of BB creams is a very natural, fresh look for the face—an ideal style for those beach-going summer months. However, just as the seasons do, we can adjust as well; the youthful glow we opt for in summer can be traded for a more mature and polished style, fitting for the shift into autumn. When October approaches, or whenever you begin to spend less time outside, consider switching to a matte foundation. Using a matte foundation becomes more practical when there is less sun exposure because unlike BB cream, the often highly pigmented matte formulas are easily brought to attention in direct sunlight. However, due to their ability to more effectively provide coverage upon the skin, matte foundations cast a noticeably “flawless” appearance over the face. In comparison to the dewy finish of BB cream, matte foundation appears velvety and dry, achieving a more matured look. Â
Hand in hand with foundation, an ideal form of fall lip color is also matte. When going out with friends on autumn evenings, leave your rosy, shiny glosses and balms in the drawer at home. Instead, pull out a matte-textured red, burgundy, or nude lipstick. Opt for a duller shade of whatever color you chose—bright shades such as scarlet are better suited for mid-summer or the upcoming holiday season.
A third, but equally important makeup tip regards choosing the right eyeshadow. When wearing a nude lipstick, opt for eyeshadows in warm tones—clay reds, dusky oranges, and sandy yellows keep the autumn spirit alive. When the focus of the face is on a bold shade of lipstick, highlight the eyes subtlely using matte shades of taupe and cream. Avoid overly sparkly eyeshadows to keep yourself looking dim or sultry.
