How to Celebrate Your Roomie’s Birthday!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapman chapter.

We’ve all heard horror stories about having a bad roommate, which is why having a GOOD roommate is one of the greatest blessings a girl could ask for! If you’re anything like me, your roommate can easily be your hero. I mean, who else can you ask at midnight what you should wear the next day? Who else can tell you that you look like crap before you leave for class? And more importantly, who else can wake you up to go to class when you’ve hit that snooze button just a few too many times?

Your roommate has your back, so it’s important to let her know how much she means to you every once in a while. And a great way to do that is by spoiling her on her birthday! With just a little bit of your time, you can show her just how special she is!

Here are a few ideas:

Decorate the Room:

1. Balloons! Nothing says “Happy Birthday!” like balloons. For just a few dollars, you can fill your room up with dozens of colorful balloons that will definitely brighten her day. Whether she wakes up to them on the morning of her birthday or walks into them after a day of classes, she’ll appreciate the fun (and unexpected!) gesture.

2. Pictures! Print some cute and silly pictures of your roommate and tape them up all over the room. Not only will she love looking back at all of your sweet (and crazy) memories, goofy pictures will surely make her laugh! If you’re sneaky (like I am) you might even put pictures up outside your bedroom door, so everyone in the building knows to wish her a Happy Birthday!

3. Birthday Poster! Make her a pretty birthday poster and hang it either somewhere inside the room or outside the door. It’s something she’ll be able to keep to remember how much thought you put into her birthday even after the day has ended.

4. Snack Attack! Turn your desk into a mini snack station of all of all her favorite treats. Calories don’t count on birthdays, so don’t hold back on getting her favorite candy! Invite some friends over for some cake, and you can have a small birthday party right in your room.

Do Something Fun Together

1. Something New! Has she been talking about trying that new Thai place down the street? Or hiking up that mountain by your school? Take advantage of her birthday and do something fun that she’s never done before!

2. Scavenger Hunt! Make a Scavenger Hunt that takes her all over the room (or all over your school!) before she reaches her final destination. You can use the Scavenger Hunt to lead her to a fun birthday dinner, a cute present, or straight to her favorite hangout.

3. Spa Day! Whether it’s a mani/pedi or a massage, who doesn’t love to be pampered a little bit? Take time to unwind with your roommate with an activity you’ll both enjoy! Don’t want to break the bank? Plan a spa night in your room, complete with DIY mani/pedis, face masks, and hair masks! Not only will you feel great in the moment, you’ll both look radiant the next day!

But perhaps the best thing you can do for your roommate for her birthday is telling her how important she is to you. Write her a card telling her how great she is or simply tell her in-person. Just making her feel loved and appreciated is all you need to do to make her day truly amazing!
