Dear Millennial Conservatives: You’re Not Oppressed

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapman chapter.

It’s primary season, that beautiful time where political opinions run rampant and there’s no possible way of avoiding them. Wherever you look, whether it be on twitter or facebook, there’s always an excess of politcally motivated content. There are some friends who are feeling the bern, and others who are more for Hillary. And then there’s the rest. The right side that cringes violently at the thought of socialism (*gasp*) and believes taking control of women’s reproductive rights is more important than making sure kids in this country don’t live in poverty (are you sensing a bias here??). Millennial conservatives may seem like a rare breed, but they do exist. And they are out for blood.

Just kidding.

But there are some issues here. Millennial conservatives feel threatened by the increase of people (especially the younger generations) who have liberal viewpoints. The reality is though, that feeling like the minority in terms of political beliefs doesn’t make you oppressed. It just means that you’re no longer the majority.

Now down to the real issues.

So your liberal professor disagrees with the GOP? That’s okay! And odds are that the majority of the class agrees with him. Why, you might ask? Because with time comes progress. And many of the ideas that the GOP maintains are outdated and have been proven unsuccessful (i.e. opposition to gay rights and harsh drug sentencing).

Not #feelingthebern? That’s also okay. You’re entitled to your opinion (although if you don’t like at least appreciate Bernie Sanders as a person, you’re probably wrong). No need to get angry about the widespread support for him among your peers, they deserve the right to support him as much as you deserve the right not to.

Don’t like seeing pro-liberal posts on tumblr? Try a different social media outlet like the Fox news twitter account.

It’s generally understood that you don’t support Donald Trump unless you’re lacking common sense or you’re just very very confused. But please clarify, what makes Ted Cruz any better?

Nobody said that democrats don’t judge. Nope, we do. If your language and propaganda is homophobic, racist, or sexist, we’re probably going to call you out on it.

Feeling sad because you can’t find anyone at your school with similar political beliefs? Try looking for friends at the local whites-only country club. You’ll be sure to find someone who shares similar viewpoints.

Ah, feminism, also know as the belief that women and men should be equal. If you don’t understand the dilemma between women’s rights and the history of conservative action against them, you might want to do some research. (read more here)

You don’t have to switch parties. Nobody can force you to. But opening your perspective a bit can’t do any harm. And to see this generation move towards the left isn’t a bad thing.  It simply means we’re headed in a better direction.
