Cheney Ray is no regular Chapman student. Known as CRAY to her fans, Cheney is on the rise as a DJ. Cheney is occasionally called the Trap Queen and continues to gain success every day. What makes CRAY so great? Read on to find out!

Age: 22

Major/minor: Sociology, leadership

Affiliation: Delta Gamma

Hometown: Vancouver, Canada

BB: What made you want to start being a DJ?

CR: I’ve always really loved music and I’ve been in the scene for a while. But my boyfriend was making a song one day and I said “wait I have an idea for a song, please teach me how” … and that’s how it started.

BB: How do you create most of your music?

CR: Ableton.

BB: How would you describe your style?

CR: Mostly black, whatever I’m comfortable in.

BB: Do you have any goals in being a DJ?

CR: Being a DJ is very much a side career and a hobby for me. My goal is to work as an agent or manager in the music industry.

BB: Explain your experience with being a DJ.

CR: It’s awesome so far, I love creating music – it’s very creative and expressive. I have my first festival coming up in May (which I am very excited for) in Georgia. I would say the only hard thing is being a woman in this industry. Constantly I get put down for being a girl, and that I’m fake because “women can’t make good music”. I’m proud to be a woman and I wish that some of the negative comments toward my gender would stop.

BB: Who is your favorite artist/DJ?

CR: There are just WAY TOO MANY. I am loving Pham and Ekali at the moment.

BB: Explain your association with pizza.

CR: Pizza is just my favorite food and I eat it constantly so I’m always posting about it. So then people started associating me with all pizza-related things. It’s awesome.

In honor of CRAY, go wear some black, eat some pizza, and check out her soundcloud here
