Album Review: Zayn Malik’s “Mind of Mine”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapman chapter.

Late last month, Zayn Malik released his debut solo album, “Mind of Mine.” To no one’s surprise, the eighteen-track album immediately reached the number one position on charts around the world thanks to both old and new fans. While the tracklist lacks an ease of flow throughout the album, fluctuating from slow to fast to slow again, most (note: not all) of the tracks, individually, have some great beats and catchy lyrics accompanied by Zayn’s killer vocals. It’s true that some of the lyrics get pretty redundant, as virtually every song on the album covers the topic of sex, drinking, or getting high — but as much was expected from a 23-year-old former boyband member who has newfound songwriting freedom that allows him to take any direction (no pun intended, seriously) that he wants.

Here are my current top ten songs from “Mind of Mine.”

1. BeFoUr

2. sHe

3. INTERMISSION: fLoWer

4. rEaR vIeW

5. wRoNg

6. BoRdErSz

7. tRuTh

8. TiO

9. LIKE I WOULD

10. SHE DON’T LOVE ME

Overall, Zayn’s first attempt at going solo was a great step in his moving his career forward.  After experiencing Zayn perform “LIKE I WOULD” in person at the iHeartRadio Music Awards, two things are clear: first, that he sounds just as good live as he does on the album and second, people (including myself) cannot wait for him to go on tour.
