5 Ways to Feel Better When You’re Sad

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapman chapter.

When life gets you down, you have got to rise up. Whether you didn’t get a job, you lost a friend or significant other, you failed a test, or you’re just feeling blue, you have the power to choose happiness. Here are 5 ways to feel better when you’re sad:

  1. Be sad

As important as it is to pick yourself up when you’re sad, it is also important to let yourself actually feel sad. Get it out of your system. Go ahead and cry. If you never let yourself feel the pain, you will just end up feeling numb.

  2. Workout

Although working out is probably the last thing on your mind, it is essential if you want to feel better. Not only does working out give you an endorphin rush, but it will also make you feel like a badass. It will remind you that you are strong and so capable. Regular exercise will keep your mind happy.

  3. Eat Clean

When you feel sad, chances are you want to eat junk food. Avoid it like the plague. Junk food will only make you more lethargic and weigh you down. Eat foods that will nourish you and give you strength. Be smart about what you eat, because your diet definitely affects your mind.

  4. Phone a Friend You are never alone and you are so loved. If you feel sad, call someone who you love. Your parents, your friends, your siblings, or your significant other will be there to comfort you. Simply talking about what is on your mind will help you feel better.

  5. Get Out

Go do something fun to get your mind off of whatever is bothering you. Go to the farmers market, go shopping, go grab coffee with a friend. Do the things that make you feel alive.
