Top 10 DIY Halloween Costumes: Chapel Hill Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapel Hill chapter.

Around Chapel Hill, everyone knows that Halloween is the one time of the year where everyone lines up and down Franklin Street wearing whatever they want and anything goes. Halloween is one of the biggest celebrations of the year on UNC’s college campus, so you may need more than one costume for the festivities awaiting you. Now I know were all college kids and don’t have the money to assemble three different costumes that will inevitably collect dust in the back of our closets, but I have found a way to keep our closet space and put some money back into our wallets. Here are 10 Halloween costumes that every girl in Chapel Hill can make from what we probably all have in our closets… so start looking ladies, Halloween is less than a month away and you don’t wanna miss out.

1. Every Girl Is A Kid At Heart

With Despicable Me 2 just released in theaters this summer, this costume shows that being dressed up like a little minion doesn’t mean you can’t make it sexy. All you need is a yellow sports bra, jean shorts, suspenders, a yellow hat, and black glasses and you’re all set. This costume keeps you classy, yet shows you still have amazing taste in kid’s movies… We all know were still kids at heart.

2. Spice Up Your Life!

Now I know we have all made our late night venture to Taco Bell on more than one occasion….even though it’s not the best for our hot physique. This costume shows the sexy side of Taco Bell sauce packets that we so often see when getting our meals. All you need is a colored dress, tape, paper, and a catchy phrase and you’re good to go. What boy doesn’t love Taco Bell?

3. Sassy, yet classy!

Now you never know what kind of weather to expect in late October, especially in Chapel Hill. This costume idea is the best option for looking cute, but keeping it classy and warm. You will not only bundled up in a long sleeve shirt and jeans, but also have the hat to complete the look. Plus, who doesn’t like a good game of Where’s Waldo?

4. Rub A Dub Dub

This isn’t your typical Halloween Costume, but if you’re feeling super creative and are willing to put in a little extra time into your costume this is the perfect idea for you. All you need is a dress, some tool, and a rope and you’re ready to go. You will be a hit on the streets of Franklin and fit right into a “anything but clothes” party theme.

5. Got A Secret Can You Keep it?

If you’re like me, I don’t ever miss a single episode of the hit TV series “Pretty Little Liars.”  This one is a fun way to involve your friends! All you need is a black dress, tape, heels, and hairspray (lots of it!) and you’re set. Everyone is dying to know who “A” is, so why wouldn’t you want to keep people guessing?

6. Blast From The Past

How many lions, tigers, and bears do you see out on Halloween? Put a cute and original spin on this original idea by throwing on a TY Beanie Baby Tag. Since we’re all from the 90’s, you can’t even pretend to deny the hidden collection of Beanie Babies in your bedroom back at home! All you need for this creative costume is first the animal of your choice, a colored dress, and a big TY tag and you’ll be the coolest chick on the block.

7. Embrace Your Inner Mean Girl

Now if you’re like me, you try to insert a Mean Girls quote into your daily conversations. We can all imagine ourselves as one of the characters whether its Cady, Gretchen, Karen, or Regina.  If you want a costume that everyone will recognize, then this is the costume for you. With a high waist skirt and t-shirt, you’ll be well on your way to looking so “fetch.”

8. Now You See Me… Now You Don’t

It’s hard to make some of your favorite childhood story books sexy, but this Three Blind Mice costume will make sure every guy can’t keep their eyes off you…. All you need is a tight black dress, some black sunglasses, heels, home-made mouse ears, and a cane and you’ll be sure to make all the other animals jealous this year.

9. Hit Me Baby One More Time

If you have a big group of friends who want to all come together for Halloween this year, this is the costume for you. Let’s see, there is the Mickey Mouse Club Britney,  school girl Britney, Snake Britney, Pregnant Britney, Shaved head Britney, and even the mom Britney. This costume will have all the people on Franklin talking, and not to mention if you get split up from your group people will still know that you’re bringing Britney back!

10. Let’s Get Hitched

If you’re feeling really sassy, and have the attitude to match it than this is the costume you should be wearing this Halloween. Bridesmaid’s is one of those classic movies that makes you laugh every time you watch it. I’ve probably seen this movie over 100 times with my friends and we can quote almost every scene. All you need is one bride in a white dress, and of course those awful hot pink bridesmaids dresses. Remember girls, in this costume,  you’ll be “more beautiful than Cinderella, smell like pine needles and have a face like sunshine!”
