Let’s be honest–a blazer or a suit can make even the least dashing of men look like a regular Fred Astaire. Well, if that’s all it takes to clean a man up, as women we can undoubtedly wear it even better. Welcome to the fall trend that is menswear, ladies. That’s right–taking the same styles guys rock and transforming them into androgynous looks for women, with little to no difficulty in the crossover.
The first menswear style that is sure to be a megatrend this fall/winter: tuxedo. Women are reviving the tuxedo style with shirts that have similar pleats and a black-and-white color scheme. Why is the tuxedo style popular now? Well, I think the better question is why has it not been popular in the past? Pleats give a tuxedo garment a clean-cut, fitted shape that translates to a consistently classic and timeless look. The key to good fashion is all about fit, after all. The beauty of tuxedos, like oxford shirts, is that they have a universally flattering fit that can be worn and appreciated by a wide range of shapes and sizes.
Daytime look: Blouse tucked into high-waisted shorts or a skirt, and paired with a cardigan. Check it out here!
Nighttime look: Tuxedo dress, topped off with a trendy fedora and maybe a clutch for a night on the town.
The second (and my personal favorite) trend to look out for this fall is the oxford/brogue shoe. Yes, the oxfords are back for another round! As if 2010 was long enough for this classic shoe to stick around. The great thing about oxfords is the vintage edge they can add to a ‘Plain Jane’ outfit, and the versatility of the seasons in which you can wear them.
Daytime look: (You can’t really go wrong here–there are so many options!) Shorts and brogues with ankle socks; Brogues with cropped pants
Nighttime look: Brogues are even better when they’re heels. Match them with stockings and a dress and you’re guaranteed to turn heads.
The most up-and-coming trend you surely have noticed on campus this fall is large-face watches. As the new statement wrist accessory, oversized watches add quite the finishing touch to a clean, polished look. The most popular styles right now are tortoiseshell and gold, and many of these traditionally masculine watches are being adorned with stones and jewels for a more feminine feel.
Anytime look: The great thing about a watch is that it is meant to go with any outfit worn at any time (pun somewhat intended)! Here are some great tortoiseshell and gold watches that match virtually any ensemble: Michael Kors, Fossil, JC Penney, DKNY, Guess
So many stores today are making “ladies’ menswear” affordable and easy to find. Some great places to check out the trends from this article are Charlotte Russe, Forever 21, ShopRuche, and JCrew.
What about you? Have you tried to sport any sort of menswear this season? If so, tell us or send us a picture of how you pulled it off!
