“I know it’s early but i have no idea what to be for Halloween! Sexy? Scary? Silly? Do you have any ideas?”

The earlier the better here – Halloween is a major deal at most schools. Halloween is commonly known as a time girls can dress completely inappropriately with no repercussions. Now as a guy, my first impulse would be “sexy” because you pretty much can’t go wrong there, ever. I don’t think there will ever be a time when a girl suggests “sexy” as an option and I’ll have to think about it very hard. But when I dig deeper then just how skimpy an outfit can be while still being considered a costume, I find there’s a checklist I go through when I look at a girl’s Halloween costume.

Creativity
– A sexy nurse or a Hooter’s girl as a costume is really played out. You don’t have to do something revolutionary, but if you’re dressed sexy…like every other person who’s ever tried to dress sexy, it won’t work. In fact, a lack of creativity might be a complete turn off for most guys. Unless you can pull it off like no other girl or you have some new funny twist…I wouldn’t try it. Group costumes or old-school costumes like picking a sporting team with a group of friends and having matching jerseys with spandex or being a risqué version of an old Nickelodeon character are always fun to see. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of girls dressed up as sexy sport’s figures. Guys would also really appreciate the hilarity in you looking hott AND reminding them of a TV show they used to watch when they were younger.

Overkill
– Sometimes costumes are TOO legit. I appreciate a girl putting effort into her costume, but if I think she hot glue gunned beads to her costume for 6 hours 2 months before hand I may be a little put off. Also, “Dead” or “Zombie” anything is usually questionable at best. All I can think of is when Lohan walks in to the party in “Mean Girls” (Yes I love that movie) and is a zombie bride. Yeah…I appreciate the effort but hitting on a girl who looks dead is not an easy or desirable task. So keep it alive. Even things that are too scary can be a big turnoff. If you’re going to go the horror route, I’d suggest you don’t overdo it, some guys can be into the darker Halloween costumes like fishnets or dark eye make up but not all guys are.

Fun-factor
– In the last two sections I mentioned guy’s opinions a few times. If your primary concern is maybe to catch the eye of a guy at a party or wherever you go, keep those in mind. But the most important thing I look at, and about Halloween costumes in general, is the fun-factor. What does that mean? It’s a little bit of a combination of the first two, with some natural personality mixed in. Does the girl look like she is enjoying her costume? If you feel uncomfortable wearing something, odds are you look uncomfortable. Make sure you have fun with whatever you choose, or you’re not going to like the 9,000 Facebook pictures your roommate puts up. Also, most guys aren’t going to approach a girl who looks out of her element.

To conclude with some suggestions: Dream Team (USA Basketball), Woody and Jessy (couple) or Woody and Buzz (2 girls), Eliza Thornberry (sexy? Someone reminded me of this show the other day and I really got a laugh)
