Pandora, Pinterest and Procrastination

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapel Hill chapter.

If you’re sick of spending your valuable procrastination time clicking through Facebook statuses or the plethora of the latest celebrity Twitter drama there are two amazing new alternatives. The technological Gods, or maybe just Steve Jobs, have made it incredibly too easy to sit and spend hours finding new music you love or looking at adorable pictures of puppies. The websites Pandora and Pinterest have combined these things with some sort of magical software that allow it to adapt to your taste.

As amazing as iTunes and all the other sources of compiling your playlists can be we all have those moments where you just wish someone could find the perfect song for you while you just go about making all those other arduous decisions the day places on you. Pandora is the twenty first century answer for this. It makes it as effortless as possible to sit back and enjoy whatever music prescribes to your mood.

All you need is an email address to create an account. After that it comes down to picking as many stations for your favorite artists as you would like. As the songs come on you can ‘like” or ‘dislike’ them and Pandora will slowly adapt to your musical preferences. After a while it seems to be better at predicting your mood than you are.

Even the older generations have started stumbling across Pandora and coming from the generation of  rabbit ears and black and white TVs websites that pick your favorite songs for you out of nowhere seem a little surreal, but they don’t seem to be complaining too much. Station choices are so broad they can appeal to all generations. From individual artists anywhere from Nicki Minaj to the Beatles and there’s even more general options like ‘the 90’s’ or specific genres. Basically if you can think of it, they’ve got it.

Pinterest on the other hand is the latest and greatest access point to all things procrastination. It allows you to explore through a surplus of websites and picture of everything from adorable babies and puppies to incredible recipes that sounds too good to be true. You can plan your dream wedding or put together your dream house, basically if you want to spend hours exploring anything on the Internet it can help you find a website to do that.

Pinterest, as it is appropriately titled, acts like a massive virtual pin board, like clipping from your favorite magazine all categorized together. Also it links into your Facebook or Twitter and from there it can explore the things your friends have fell in love with and “repinned.” Some of the awesome websites I’ve stumbled across include http://www.hostessblog.com/2009/02/fabulous-rainbow-cake-tutorial/ (Rainbow cake!!) and http://noskinnybitcheshere.tumblr.com/post/11101704790 (how long until spring break?!?) and these are just two of many amazing websites waiting for you to stumble across them.

The only downside to either of these technological goodies is that Pandora limits your ability to skip through a certain number of songs per hour and Pinterest requires an invitation before you can join in on the festivities. However the best part about either one of them they’re both completely free! So the next time you find yourself at procrastination station try giving either one of these a try, you definitely won’t regret it.
