While most of us are still in the process of trying to figure out what it is that we want to do for the rest of our lives, Senior Alex Li embodies the philosophy that “the world is your oyster,” and he has showcased his many diverse talents at UNC for the past four years to prove it. Not only is Alex the president of Kamikazi, UNC’s own hip-hop team, he also has found the time this year to hold leadership positions on various organizations around campus. He even designed his own clothing company! Alex’s diversity, friendliness, passion, UNC school spirit and sick dance moves make him this week’s Campus Celebrity!
Â
HC: How did you become involved with Kamikazi?
Alex: I joined second semester freshman year after seeing Kazi perform around campus, as well as on Youtube videos. I hadn’t had any prior dance experience, but I knew I’d regret it if I didn’t try out and pursue a passion.
Â
HC: What do you think is the coolest thing about Kamikazi?
Alex: The passion and work ethic of like-minded individuals. Regardless of your background, when you join Kazi, you’re family. Everyone loves to dance, and we have the most fun when we’re practicing hard for performances and competition. In my nearly four years on the team, seeing people grow as dancers as a result of being on Kazi is very rewarding.
HC: What else are you involved with on campus?
Alex: I’ve done many things in my college career, including serving as Asian Student Association Social Chair, Orientation Leader and Million Meals Team Leader, but my senior year has been dominated with job applications and starting my own clothing company, Fresh From Birth. Check us out ;) www.freshfrombirth.com
HC: What has been your best UNC memory so far?
Alex: Winning first place at “So You Think You Can Dance: Carolina Edition” with Kazi last year! We worked our butts off preparing for that performance, and placing first was a testament to our team’s dedication. Well, winning the National Championship sophomore year takes the cake, but I’m holding out in hopes of a senior championship send off.
Â
HC: Any plans after graduatation?
Alex: I have a few job offers, but I’m going to take my business degree and move out to LA to pursue an acting career. Completely related, I know. But I’m aware of the risks inherent to my desired line of work, and I’ve been building my acting resume and networking for the past year and a half. I’d much rather spend the next two years as a struggling artist than spend the next twenty regretting my decision not to chase my dreams. And who knows? Maybe I’ll make it big, and this will be the first of many, many interviews.
