With sun streaming through classroom windows, birds singing in the blooming trees and cold weather seemingly behind us, we want to take advantage of our beautiful campus. But balancing studying in the library and soaking up the sun on the quad is no easy task.
A lunchtime picnic is the perfect interruption to our day spent moving from building to building. Pack the essentials, claim your spot of grass on the quad or in the arboretum, and then sit back and enjoy the peaceful outdoors.
The food could easily come from the top or bottom of Lenoir, but if you are searching for some variety, try switching it up for the picnic. Rams Head Market, the Pit Stop and the Daily Grind have some pre-made sandwich options, or if you are feeling adventurous, take a trip to Weaver Street Market in Carrboro.
Weaver Street Market has a wide variety of picnic-perfect foods. Their freshly baked breads and wide variety of cheeses are reminiscent of a French marketplace. A great combination for the picnic would be brie cheese and a French baguette.
Though the market is primarily a grocery store, Weaver Street also has ready-to-eat appetizers, entrées and desserts. Just grab one of the containers by the buffet, and start filling. The salad bar in itself can provide you with enough for a meal; vegetables, grains like tabouli and couscous, olives and fruit make for a colorful and delicious plate. The soups and pastas are tasty options, as well.
The desserts are mouth-watering to look at and nearly impossible to resist. Treat yourself to a piece of cake or pie as the perfect cherry on top of your picnic.
If you can’t seem to find the time to make it down to Weaver Street Market but still want some local and organic options for the picnic, don’t worry. A farmers’ market is coming to campus!
In honor of National Nutrition Month, the Nutrition Coalition is bringing a three-day farmers’ market to campus in the Atrium of the Michael Hooker Research Center, a part of the School of Public Health.
The farmers’ market will be there March 28, April 4 and April 11 from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.
The market will feature produce from Lyon Farms in Creedmoor, N.C.
The market is a “wonderful opportunity for students and faculty to celebrate healthy eating and support our local farmers,” said Katrina Levine, Co-President of Nutrition Coalition.
Last year, the Nutrition Coalition hosted a one-day farmers’ market, which was met with much enthusiasm from students. The group decided to expand the market to three days this year.
With options of fresh, local produce from the Nutrition Coalition’s farmers’ market, organic food from Weaver Street Market and the convenient pre-made sandwiches from campus stores, your springtime picnic is sure to be a delicious success.
