How to Stick to Your New Year’s Resolution

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapel Hill chapter.

Ladies, it is time to start prepping for bikini season and what better way to prep than to make a New Year’s resolution to workout. To avoid becoming one of many inspired fitness enthusiasts crowding gyms that gives up within a month, here are five tips for you to stay motivated and keep your fitness program going all year.

1. Make working out part of your weekly schedule.
Make working out part of your normal routine. Designate what days and times you are going to workout. When you have already planned to workout you will be more likely to follow through with it.  You do not have to plan to workout every day. Your body needs rest so give yourself a couple of free days each week to relax and let your body recover. I like to workout in the mornings before I get ready for class. It is a great way to start my day knowing I have already crossed one thing off my list of things to do. Gyms also tend to be less crowded in the mornings. If you are not a morning person though, do not worry, the Student Recreation Center and Rams Head Recreation Center at UNC-CH are open until midnight Monday through Thursday.

2. Set small goals.
When you start your fitness program make small goals for yourself. If you set unrealistic goals that will take a long time to accomplish, you are more likely to become discouraged. Instead, try making goals that are realistic for your current fitness level. You might start off with the goal of running one mile without stopping. Accomplishing your goals will assure you that your hard work is paying off.

3. Workout with a partner or group.
Working out with friends will make it more fun. You can also motivate each other to meet your goals and to not skip out on a workout. You might surprise yourself and even want to workout when you are looking forward to hanging out with your friends while doing it.

4. Reward yourself.
Whenever you meet one of your fitness goals reward yourself for your dedication and hard work. You deserve it! Get a manicure and pedicure with your friends or see a movie, preferably starring Ryan Gosling. Show off your progress with a cute new outfit and be proud of your body.

5. Have fun!
Working out should not feel like a job. Do fitness activities that you will enjoy. If you hate running try swimming or zumba. If you are more into sports join an intramural team. UNC-CH offers a variety fitness classes through the Student Recreation Center, Rams Head Recreation Center and Fetzer Gym. Workout class schedules and intramural information can be found below.
