How-to: Get a Guy to Buy You a Drink

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapel Hill chapter.

“The girls who have men flocking over them to buy them drinks all have one thing in common.  They smile.”  -DJ JaBig

The essentials:

  • Choose a location.  Make sure you go somewhere you feel comfortable.  Pick a place where you know you a lot of guys hang out.
  • Buy your own drink first.  Try to avoid the “I’m desperate” look.  If you don’t want to spend a lot of money, buy something cheap.  Having your own drink makes you feel more independent and confident.
  • Less is more.  Break away from your group of girls.  It’s usually intimidating for a guy to approach a group, one person is more inviting.  It’s also likely that the guy will be more inclined to buy you a drink if he doesn’t get the impression that your friends want one too.
  • Don’t judge a book by its cover.  Give him a chance.  Talk to the guy first.  He might end up being the most interesting person you meet all night.  Be polite.  Don’t walk up to him and ask “So, do you want to buy me a drink?”  Chances are it won’t be appreciated, and you’ll walk away empty-handed.

  • Don’t be “that” girl.
If he says no, don’t complain to your friends.  Bars in Chapel Hill are usually so crowded, so the odds are no one noticed.  Save yourself the embarrassment, laugh and move on.  On the opposite hand, don’t lead someone on if you’re planning to flee the scene five minutes later, be polite.
  • Enjoy your night.  Don’t follow someone around all night because they bought you a drink.   Don’t expect him to follow you, either.  If things go well, introduce your friends to his friends.

Moral of the story: Accept, if offered.  Don’t expect it.  Make sure to watch the bartender make your drink so you know what’s in it.  And remember, an eight dollar cocktail doesn’t ensure anything.
