Fresh face, fresh start: Makeup looks for the new semester

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapel Hill chapter.

Remember when you were a little kid and picking the perfect outfit for the first day of school was extremely important (or maybe that’s still you?)

Although what you wear can be important, applying a little makeup can go a long way to improve your look as well. It is critical that you don’t use a thick foundation or heavy eyeshadows when the weather is still hot.

Below are some of my favorite looks, along with my favorite makeup brands I use to achieve the looks:

Eyes: When asked what they like most about their appearance, many girls will answer “my eyes.” So, play them up! If you have light eyes, neutral shades make your eyes pop. Brown, light gray and silver eyeshadows look beautiful with blue and green eyes. Shimmery golds and light rose colors can also look magical.

Apply a thick coat of mascara and eyeliner along your upper lashes to complete the look.

If you have dark eyes, silver and gold are beautiful colors that bring out the different shades in your eyes. Colors with more pigment, such as eggplant or lilac can be used to brighten the eye. Jewel tones look beautiful on people with dark eyes, but if you think it might be too intense as an eyeshadow try a teal or plum eyeliner to make your brown eyes glow.

Products:
Too Faced: Natural Eye palette
Urban Decay’s Naked palette
Dior 5-color palette

Cheeks: Choose a light pink blush for a fresh, clean look. Coral colored blushes are beautiful, but be careful not to get one with orange undertones if you choose to use one.

Lips: It’s still August so you can get away with bright hues. Try a pink with peach undertones or the brighter shades of berry.

Products:
Korres blush in pink rose
Lancome Juicy Tube in Berry Bold
Loreal Color Riche Balm in Heavenly Berry

Face: Foundation is very important because it covers the most surface area on your face. Less is more! Make sure your foundation is oil-free so it doesn’t clog pores. Mineral makeup and natural make-ups are much better for your skin than those foundations that include silicone and other chemicals. The foundation should also have an SPF of at least 15.

Products:
bareMinerals Original foundation
Zuzu Luxe Liquid Foundation

Mix and match these looks and products for a bright, fresh look. Also, keep a good cleanser and makeup remover on hand to keep your face clean. Oil-free makeup removers tend to leave a cleaner finish.
