Fashion Forecast: Spring 2012 Pattern and Color Trends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapel Hill chapter.

Cold winter weather has eluded us this season, and here at Her Campus UNC, no one is complaining. It may already feel like spring, but in approximately eight weeks, it will officially be time to trade in your cozy winter sweater for something more vibrant.

Last fall, the runways at New York City’s Spring 2012 Fashion Week were a host to wearable looks all over the color spectrum. Designers like Nanette Lepore sashayed models down the runway in neon color combos and bold new prints we know you’ll love! It’s still January, but for those fashion conscious ladies who stay one trend ahead, here’s our fashion forecast.

Neon Color Blocking
Spring runways were electric with last year’s color blocking trend. Color blocking is not necessarily making a comeback since it never left, but it gets a facelift this season with vibrant neons. Color blocking is a fun way to add color to your look, but don’t overdo it — stick to three colors, max.

Hannah, a UNC senior from Greensboro, said that she’s most looking forward to wearing neons this spring. “I like that color blocking allows more room for colorful bottoms.” she says. “I like the new ways you can incorporate color blocking with makeup and nails.”

Graphic Patterns
Lela Rosa’s spring collection has an impressive selection of graphic patterns. If you’re tired of classic prints like stripes and polka dots, then these fun twists may be just the style you need!

Super-bold Prints
Crazy prints were abundant on spring 2012 runways. Designers like Joseph Altuzarra weren’t afraid to be bold with oversized florals and geometric shapes. Speaking of bold, check out the eyebrows on
Altuzarra’s models!

Ash, a UNC freshman from Athens, says that she’s most looking forward to wearing canary hues this semester. “I definitely like contrasting patterns,” Ash says. “I really like high-waisted shorts. The shorts I’m wearing, the pattern goes this way [vertical], and the pattern on my leggings is horizontal.”

Oranges and  Tangerines
The it color of Spring is without a doubt tangerine. Have you been to Forever 21 lately? Tangerine adorns blazers, sweaters and shorts, and that’s just a few. If tangerine is not your shade, look forward to having more citrus shades to choose from.

Marc Jacobs, spring 2012

What color trend are you most looking forward too?
“Ink.”

How would you wear the color tangerine?
“I’m looking forward to bolder brighter colors you can pair together. I would wear bright tangerine shorts and lighter sandals.”

Gina, junior, Charlotte, N.C.

Pink Short Suits
The most wearable office-appropriate look this season, pink short suits are perfect for that spring internship. Not only is this trend vibrant, but it is also versatile. You can wear the blazer and shorts separately for a completely new set of outfits.

DKNY, spring 2012

How would you wear a pink short suit?
“That’s interesting. I actually don’t own a blazer. I don’t think I would wear it all together- i might mix it up.”

Catherine, sophomore, Cary, N.C.

Pastel Shades
Not everyone is brave enough to wear wild, bright colors. If look-at-me shades are not your style, pastels offer an alternative low-key option.

Philip Lim, spring 2012

What color trend are you most looking forward too?
“My favorite color is lilac. I’m really excited about wearing pastel colors.”

Uomou, Junior, Raleigh, NC

“I would say pastels are going to be big this spring. A lot of neons, minty greens, and corals.”

Lola, Senior, New York City

Black On Yellow
No longer black and yellow. This spring designers will offer black on yellow styles that finally won’t make you look like a giant bumble bee. Yigal Azrouel combines black and yellow  in a series of georgette prints, while designer Monique Lhuillier makes a silk trench coat more elegant by adding black lace detail.

Metallic Basics
Metallic go-to party accessories will be transformed this season into wrap skirts, slim trousers, and boyfriend blazers. Style tip: Pair the metallic wardrobe classics with neutral basics or accessories.

Diesel, Theysken’s Theory, spring 2012

What color trend are you most looking forward too?
“I Like metallics, just ‘cause I like studs and stuff.”

How would you wear a metallic basic?
“I would wear metallic pants with a nice collared shirt, tucked in, with a belt … and a bowtie. I’m obsessed with bowties.”

Elke Esmeralda, sophomore, New York City
