I
t makes your heart race. It makes you sweat. We’ve all done it, or want to do it. It’s Zumba.

Zumba has been wildly popular among college women as a fun and exciting way to exercise. It’s even number 46 on the UNC Bucket List of things to do before you graduate.

Instructors create their own dances with a fusion of hip hop and Latin styles to keep you on your feet. Don’t worry, it’s easy to follow.

Zumba classes are offered every day of the week because they’re in such high demand. Crowds always show up, but space is limited. Latecomers are sometimes turned away. It’s safe to say that Zumba is one of the hottest ways to stay fit.

This year, UNC Campus Recreation is fueling the fire for this dance-fitness craze by hosting its first annual Zumbathon. Come join us this Thursday, September 22nd at the Ram’s Head Recreation Center from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Buy your ticket and get a cute t-shirt at the SRC 101 or at the event for just $15. Extra shirts will also be sold at the event for $10.

The theme for the event is “Dancing for Water,” and all proceeds will benefit A Drink for Tomorrow, a UNC group that helps raise awareness and funds for the nearly 900 million people in communities around the globe that lack access to clean and safe water.

“Given the immense popularity of Zumba at Campus Rec, we wanted to use Zumbathon as an opportunity to give back to a student organization,” said Kate Rudy, one of the planners behind the affair.

The directors of Campus Rec wanted the money raised to go to a good cause, and who better than a fine group of Tar Heels? That way, students are involved in the whole process–from planning, to dancing, to helping others.

Zumbathon promises to be an awesome night. Look forward to 20 minutes of samba, salsa, and hip hop, alternated with 10 minutes of entertainment from your favorite a capella and dance groups.

Campus Rec will also provide snacks and water so you don’t run out of steam.

To get the word out, Campus Rec set up flash mobs in the Pit during lunchtime on Tuesday and Wednesday. Onlookers got a preview of what Zumbathon has in store. Students were welcome to join in on the party, and even Campus Rec’s new mascot, Gus the Gorilla, got his groove on.

You’ll want to come out to Zumbathon, because all other exercise classes (besides yoga and water aerobics) will be canceled after 5 p.m. on the big day.
