I actually got a chance to talk to Ricky Mac and he told me a little bit about his inspiration and his future music plans. You might want to read this, collegiettes™.
HC: How did you get started with rapping?
Ricky: It all started when I got my Mac computer freshmen or sophomore year of high school. I always loved music, so I just started messing around with the loops. I found I had a horrible singing voice and decided to try rapping. I started singing over the rappers. I got this digital audio workstation for the computer called Fruity Loops and my instrumental got better.
HC: When did you release your first song? How did you do that?
Ricky: Two to three months ago I decided to actually make music and started with “Break at Dawn” song and went to a recording studio in Greensboro. It took only two to three weeks to release it. It was a quick turnaround to get the idea.
HC: What inspires you to make music?
Ricky: I think music itself inspires me because I see the effect it has on people and on me. For example, when you watch a commercial and it has a powerful music behind it,the way it moves you; I decided that I wanted to be a part of that experience.
HC: Is there anything new you’re working on?
Ricky: I’m actually writing a song about UNC Basketball, which will be released on February 6th. It’ll be uplifting and powerful and about the championships that we won, kind of like a hype-up.
HC: What do you hope to achieve in your music? What is your goal?
Ricky: Right now I’m just having fun doing it and it’s not something that I’m setting too high expectations doing it. If it turns out that I release a good song and can perform places and I get fans out it, I would love it; but at the same time, just doing it for the fun of it and just because I love it. I’d love to perform somewhere and put out some songs that get a lot of fans out of it.
HC: What is an advice you give to students who want to follow their passion?
Ricky: It’s time to follow your passion, you’re in college and you don’t have too many obligations. You got so many people around you that can help you. Just try it and go for it, in the end if you’re having fun doing it that’s all that matters. You’re not going to succeed every time — you’re going to fail many times before you succeed.
