Campus Celeb: Georgia Walker ‘14

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapel Hill chapter.

1. What roles do you have on campus?

I am the president of the senior class, directly managing 40 senior marshals as we organize events that foster senior interaction, facilitate donations that give back to the senior class and help in the transition to the post-grad life.

I am also the managing editor of Passport Magazine, a study abroad magazine that highlights UNC students who have traveled and want to share their story.

I am an anchor for Carolina’s TV show, Sports Xtra, a highlights and analysis show.

2. What made you want to get involved?

It would be silly not to get involved on UNC’s campus. The opportunities are incredible here and I would hate to miss out on taking part in the real Carolina experience. Sometimes I have to remind myself that there are 4,000 seniors just on this campus alone and it’s worth putting yourself out there to meet as many of those people. Everyone has something to offer and it’s exciting getting to know new people, even if it is already senior year. Getting involved has been extremely rewarding in terms of the incredible seniors I have met just in the past few months.

3. What are your goals as senior class president?

A specific goal that I am aiming for is to achieve a 48% participation rate from seniors towards the class gift. We want as many seniors as possible to give back to the school to show their appreciation for Carolina. We also want to encourage class unity before we graduate by hosting social events.

4. What do you like to do in your free time?

When I’m not spending time with friends, I like to be extremely active, but not necessarily in the gym. I enjoy playing outdoor sports, sailing, biking, water sports and rock climbing.

5. Describe your internship experience this summer.

I worked for NBC Universal as a news partnership intern this summer. I helped write pitches, promote stories and coordinate satellite talks with NBC’s affiliate stations around the country. As for the glamorous side of working in 30 Rock, I was fortunate to meet some of NBC’s correspondents such as Brian Williams, Andrea Mitchell, Dr. Nancy, Savannah Guthrie, Al Roker and Hoda Kotb. It was exciting to see these TV personalities are regular people too.

6. What are your plans for next year?

I wish I had an answer to this question. I am interested in media marketing and communications but have not found my dream job yet!

7. What is your favorite part of UNC?

There’s too much about UNC to claim as my “favorite” but I can say that I never fail to be in awe of the bell tower. There is something special about its grandeur that I have been impressed with since freshman year.

8. What are some of the most interesting places you have traveled?

I enjoy traveling and hope to make it a large part of my future. Argentina was probably my favorite travel destination but most recently I spent a summer in Amman, Jordan. It was an invaluable experience as I learned so much about the regional culture, religion and lifestyle of the Jordanians.

9. What is one interesting fact about yourself?

I can wiggle my ears on command.

10. What accomplishment are you most proud of?

I am most proud of the group of marshals I have working with me this year. It might not sound specifically like an accomplishment but we put a lot of time and effort into the selection process that has given us such an incredible group. They are all extremely passionate, dedicated and enthusiastic about everything we have planned this year for seniors.
