Best Halloween Movies (For the Scaredy Cats)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapel Hill chapter.

Are you one of those people who jumps at even the sound of a scary-movie theme song? Someone who sleeps with the light on after watching something like Paranormal Activity or Nightmare on Elm Street? Well fear not! (Excuse the pun). You aren’t alone, and there are movies that you can get in the spirit with, without having to check under your bed before going to sleep. Below are some Halloween movies that if you haven’t checked out, you should! They are just the right amount of trick and treat.

Halloweentown

It doesn’t get much less scary than Disney Channel’s Halloweentown. This classic annual must-watch tells the story of a young girl who finds out she’s a witch whose grandma lives in a parallel universe that is Halloween year-round. The best part? There are two more sequels that bring in even more creepy creatures and adventures. Okay, well there was that 4th installment that tried to make the whole lead-actress swap work, but we can just pretend that that didn’t happen. Besides, the classic trilogy is more than enough to whet your appetite for ghouls, magic, and witches.

Hocus Pocus

Speaking of magic and witches, one of the most watched Halloween movies is Hocus Pocus. The story starts when a virgin lights and candle and unlocks a century’s old curse that brings back three soul-sucking witches from the dead. It follows three kids around on Halloween as they try to escape witches, bullies, and zombies. The movie is face paced, fun, and just the right amount of frightful.

Nightmare Before Christmas

I’m never quite sure if it’s best to watch this at Chistmas or Halloween, but either way, Tim Burton’s stop animation tale of the King of Halloween’s quest to take over Christmas is both funny and musical. Jack Skellington became an icon in this classic with his romantic tendencies and defeat of the scary villain stereotype.

Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice is just about as creepy as you can get without being too scary. The movie is about a newlywed couple that dies in a car crash. They then enlist the help of a skeevy crypt-keeper to run an up-tight couple out of their house. The movie has a lot of creeps and even more laughs. The best scene would have to a dinner party where the guests are possessed and sing the “Banana Boat Song”. Check it out!

Fun Size

This new movie, that hit theaters October 26th, has the potential to be a new Halloween classic. Fun Size is about a teen girl who is forced to babysit her little brother on Halloween in the midst of her conquest for the school heart throb – bummer. The problem? She loses him! The movie details her misadventures while flashing to the wild adventures of her mischievous little brother. It’s sure to be funny, so go check it out!
