Even if you’ve never heard of him, chances are you’ve already admired Wes Anderson’s work as a writer, director and all-around genius. His 2013 Prada: Candy short film and his 2016 H&M campaign, Come Together: A Fashion Picture in Motion, were mere glimpses of his quirky combination of quick wit and campy characters, which makes every film an experience. Wes Anderson’s world, whether you’re visiting for three minutes or two hours, is an enchanting place filled with Bill Murray, elaborate plans, troubled parent/children relationships, the Owen brothers, 1960s scores and over-the-top color schemes. He’s currently working on a film entitled The Rosenthal Suite, so now is the perfect time to get caught up (IMDb). If you’re a first-time traveler, then the collection of zany worlds may feel daunting, but never fear! Here is your guide to getting into Wes Anderson.

1. Fantastic Mr. Fox

A stop-motion story about an ambitious fox who ends up pissing off three powerful farmers in the process of seeking a better life for himself and his family, Fantastic Mr. Fox is nearly impossible not to love. Characters are imbued with the luxurious voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman, just to name a few. If you are a woodland animal lover (or even a liker), then this is a must-have in your movie arsenal. No, I’m not cussing with you.

2. Moonrise Kingdom

We may be all grown up and in college or whatever, but some days it’s hard not to feel the pubescent angst. Moonrise Kingdom is the story of Suzie (who feels completely misunderstood by her parents) and Sam (who has no parents at all) who run away together in the wake of a hurricane. With cuffing season fast approaching, it’s hard not to feel nostalgic about all our childhood loves. Things were so much simpler then. Whether you have a steady bae or are pining for your middle school khaki scout, this movie will give you all the feels.

3. The Grand Budapest Hotel

I’ll be perfectly frank- if you’re like me and love pink and purple, then you are going to adore The Grand Budapest Hotel. If the gorgeous color scheme wasn’t enough, then the story of a bellhop and concierge trying to track down the famous “Boy With Apple” painting on the edge of the fictional ZZ invasion, is sure to entertain.

4. The Royal Tenenbaums

And you thought your family was dysfunctional. The Royal Tenenbaums tracks the story of the poorly adjusted, genius Tenenbaum children in their adult years, as their narcissistic father returns to announce that he’s dying. As college students, it’s impossible not to feel the crushing weight of our potential, and it’s nice to know the struggle bus runs over everyone now and again. Just don’t forget some self-love.

Other notable mentions are Rushmore, The Darjeeling Limited, Isle of Dogs and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, if you’re ready to go deeper into Wes’ world. You’re going to cussing love it!
