Batteries Not Included: How to Introduce Your Vibrator into the Relationship

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapel Hill chapter.
Women have a hard time disbelieving the myth that their vibrators intimidate men. Thankfully, that just isn’t so.

Recently, researchers at Indiana University’s Center for Sexual Health Promotion surveyed over 3,000 Americans between the ages of 18 and 60 about their attitudes on women’s vibrator use. The study found that 37 percent of women agreed that vibrators are intimidating to men, while 70 percent of men were not intimated.

That is good news for us. Now that we don’t have to worry about our boyfriends taking off at the sight of our battery powered “package” in the bedroom, use these tips on finally ease your vibrator into your relationship.

Communicate.
There is no reason to feel embarrassed that you want to spice things up. If this is something that has been on your mind for a while, say so. Tell him why you’re interested, and most importantly, why you think he will enjoy it. If you’re open and honest about your feelings, he will be more comfortable to tell you if he is into it.

Be sensitive.
Once you have talked about your desires, be sensitive to his comfort level. Sometimes going to far outside of your comfort zone can be uncomfortable and overwhelming. If you sense he is uncomfortable, talk about it, and try to find a compromise that will incorporate both of your desires.

Start off small.
If he is hesitant, try not to scare him off by pulling out a giant one. Start off small with a vibrating ring (Durex and Trojan make them and they are available at Walgreens). What is a vibrating ring, you ask? It’s a silicone ring you slip around his penis that has a vibrator attached. Just like a condom, make sure the ring fits properly and it’s not too tight.

Mix in some oral.
Yeah, I just went there. As you give him oral sex, hold the vibrator against your check. Your mouth will quiver and the sensation will be unexpected. Don’t worry, he can return the favor.

Don’t ignore the perineum.
I know what your thinking, what the hell is a perineum? Besides his penis, for him the perineum is a gift from God! It is a super sensitive patch of skin between his balls and anus. Next time you’re on top, take out a toy (anything bigger than your finger might freak him out) and hold it against this area.

Give him control.
Once you’re both comfortable with the toy, give him complete control. Let him decide the settings. All you have to do is just lay back and relax.

The tips above will help you if you already own a vibrator, but if your new to vibrators and wondering what type of vibrator you should start with, check out these vibrators available at jimmyjane.com.

Start simple.
If your both new to a vibrator, the excitement of trying something new can be more than enough stimulation. Start with a simple vibrator that focuses on clitoral stimulation such as a bullet.
Iconic Bullet $16

Start small.
I can’t stress this enough, bigger is not always better. When trying a vibrator for the first time, especially with another person present, consider a vibrator that is unintimidating for the both of you. My suggestion, after you heat things up with some foreplay, grab a smoothie.
Iconic Smoothie $20

Start pretty.
Think of your vibrator as another accessory. Picking an aesthetically pleasing vibrator communicates that sex is an important part of the relationship,  and worthy of your care and consideration. Nothing will say you care more than 24k gold Little Something vibrator. If you’re not a gold girl, try platinum.
Little Platinum $395

Start iconic.

We can’t have a conversation about vibrators without mentioning the most iconic vibrator of all time, the Rabbit. A cameo on Sex and The City  (the television show not the movie) and positive reviews from tons of celebrities have made the rabbit a bestseller. Think you can handle it? Be careful, it’s one of the most powerful vibrators you can buy.
