Back-to-School Changes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapel Hill chapter.

Whether you spent the summer in another country, a different city or state, or even in Chapel Hill, there are a lot of changes on campus that you may not have noticed. If it’s your first year on campus, here are some things the rest of us are also adjusting to!

ON CAMPUS

Remember when it took ten minutes to print something at the bottom of the Undergraduate Library? Well, (hopefully) not anymore! Over the summer, CCI printing expanded its printing locations. CCI printers can be found in the McColl, Kenan Science, Sloane Art Library and Alumni buildings. This should make it easy for students around campus to print in the location closest to them. Also, printers can now be found on each of the main floors and labs of the Undergraduate Library and Davis Library.

ON FRANKLIN STREET

Artisan Pizza
Artichoke and Basil is no more! The pizzeria has changed its name to Artisan Pizza. Luckily, only the name has changed. They still offer the famous artichoke and basil pizza that keeps us coming back.

Bevello

This new boutique recently opened on Franklin Street. The business was started by a 2007 UNC-CH grad and began as an online boutique.  There are now eight locations, including the Franklin Street location. The store features clothing and accessories from up-and-coming independent designers. It definitely seems like somewhere we all want to shop!

IN THE CLASSROOM

Heel Mail
University officials decided to switch from Webmail to the new HeelMail. This service is free of charge for the University and comes from Microsoft. Student email addresses are now their ONYEN followed by “@live.unc.edu”. The new system has increased mail space and a calendar function that was not available in Webmail. Students can still opt to have their mail forwarded to a different email address.

Sakai
Instead of Blackboard, professors are encouraged to use the new system, Sakai. According to the Daily Tar Heel, more than 1,372 courses have started using the new online learning management system, which is twice the projected number of courses that project leaders expected. Sakai is also cheaper than Blackboard, which should help the University during budget cuts. Administrators plan to require all professors to switch to Sakai by December of 2012.
