5 Female Characters Who Showed Us the Power Of Self-Love

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapel Hill chapter.

Like many, I have watched a ton of movies and TV shows. It is one of my favorite pastimes and my favorite thing to do on a rainy day. It doesn’t matter the genre, be it comedy, horror, action, documentary – you name it, I’ve probably seen it.

Since it’s getting close to Valentine’s Day, a day of love, it might feel like the day is only for couples, but Valentine’s Day can be a good day to hang with your girls or have a self-care day!

In honor of this, I wanted to put together a list of female characters who have shown us the power of self-love and self-acceptance.

Regina Mills (Once Upon A Time)

If you were to look up self-acceptance and self-love in the dictionary, a picture of this woman would be on the page. Throughout the seven seasons of Once Upon A Time, it was inspiring to watch Regina’s journey to finally accepting her flaws and truly loving herself.

Phoebe Buffay (Friends)

We all know and love the quirky masseuse from Friends, Ms. Phoebe Buffay. Her self-confidence radiated from the screen. She was never afraid to be herself.

Tracey Turnblab (Hairspray)

The spunky dancer who just wanted to be on The Corny Collins Show. She may have looked different from people like Amber, but Tracey taught us two important lessons: be who you are and follow your dreams.

Elle Woods (Legally Blonde)

Looks can be deceiving. The term “dumb blonde” ceased to exist in the world of Elle Woods. Elle walked into Harvard Law and came out on the other side, proving to us determination goes a long way. She also did it by never compromising who she was for anyone.

Mabel Pines (Gravity Falls)

I had to add this character. If you don’t know, Mabel Pines is one of the main characters in Disney XD’s animated show, Gravity Falls. She and her brother, Dipper, spend the summer with their great uncle, Grunkle Stan, in the town of Gravity Falls. Mabel assists her brother in solving mysteries and trying to figure out the secrets of the strange town.

She lights up the room and makes every situation better with her bright, quirky sweaters. Mabel is protective of her brother and dislikes anyone who doesn’t like him. She says she is “the arts and crafts master.” Mabel is the ultimate best friend and treats everyone with respect.

Like other women on this list, she is completely fearless when it comes to being herself.
