5 Feel-Good Movies You Can Stream on Netflix

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapel Hill chapter.

Most of us enjoy spending our weekends at the many great bars on Franklin Street and in Carrboro, but sometimes it’s nice to enjoy a more low-key night in. Whether you’re alone or with your friends, these films, all available for streaming on Netflix Instant, are great options for when you don’t feel like going out.

1. Clueless (1995). An all-time classic, this Amy Heckerling film will have you longing to be back in high school again and maybe even inspire you to reread Emma. From a young Paul Rudd as golden boy Josh to the late Brittany Murphy as Tai (not to mention Alicia Silverstone as Cher herself!), the talent in this movie is superb, even if it’s a bit cheesy at times. But sometimes, collegiettes need a day to unwind and watch a girly movie, and that’s okay!

2. Tiny Furniture (2010). If you’re worried about your post-graduate career plans or are stressed out by homework, watching this film will remind you that we’ve all been there. In Lena Dunham’s breakout hit, the main character, Aura (played by Dunham herself), undergoes similar struggles to Hannah Horvath, Dunham’s character on Girls, as she struggles to find a job and successful relationships after graduating from college. Even though prospects might look grim at times, the film, and Dunham’s work in general, will remind you that it’s important to maintain a positive outlook about your own future–look how successful Dunham is today!

3. Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961). If you haven’t seen this iconic film and read the novel by Truman Capote, we have your weekend plans! Audrey Hepburn’s Holly Golightly is as influential today as her character was when the film was made. And Golightly’s signature Givenchy dress remains one of the most recognized fashion items from any movie, so the film is also a must-see if you’re into style and designer looks.

4. True Grit (2010). The 1969 version with John Wayne is available on Netflix Instant, too, but the Coen brothers’ version stays true to the Charles Portis novel. The 2010 version also stars Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross, and Steinfeld earned an Oscar nomination for her performance. If you’ve read a fashion magazine in the last few years, you’ll know that Steinfeld is a favorite among designers (she’s even served as a Teen Vogue ambassador at previous fashion weeks!), and True Grit was the film that helped her career take off. Even if you’re not into Westerns, you’ll love this story of a young girl’s unrelenting love for her father and his memory.

5. L!fe Happens (2011): If you loved Krysten Ritter on Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23, you’ll love her turn as a single mom in this smart rom-com. Ritter struggles to make ends meet and balance child care with her job and a social life, and her roommates, played by Kate Bosworth (Blue Crush) and Rachel Bilson (The O.C.), add hilarity to the mix. If you’re looking for a cute, romantic movie, this is a great option for a girls’ night in with your friends.
