JLaw Criticised for Rape Joke

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CCCU chapter.

The Hunger Games and X-Men: First Class actress came out with the tasteless line in response to seeing critically acclaimed director Alfonso Cuarón.

JLaw apparently screamed in delight when she spotted him.

Then when she approached him, she supposedly claimed, “I broke out my rape scream for you.”

Condemnation has rained down upon the twenty-three-year-old actress hard and fast.

From celebrity blogger Perez Hilton to writers for the website Crushable to members of the public on Twitter, negative feedback has dominated the response to JLaw’s foolish remark, which has been dubbed “medieval” and “in bad taste“.

JLaw is known for being unreserved with her thoughts and has spoken out on topics such as the representation of female body image in Hollywood, having described herself as “obese” and a “fat actress” by Hollywood standards.

However, it seems that her acknowledged lack of mental filter has landed her in hot water.

In the December 2012 issue of Elle magazine, she admitted that she “never [knows] what’s going to come out of [her] mouth, and it’s horrible“.

She also expressed concern that she would “get in trouble” for saying the wrong thing.

And it seems that time has finally arrived.

So far, JLaw has neither commented on nor apologised for her insensitive remark.

But does she need to apologise? Here are our Campus Contributors’ thoughts on the subject.

Penny: Absolutely. Whether it was meant to be hurtful or not, it’s still inappropriate and insensitive. Careless comments can be just as damaging as malicious ones.

Melissa: Everyone says things like that, I don’t think she meant it in an offensive way.

Shelby: It’s not like she’s condoning rape in any way. She’s just had a slip of the tongue in using an inappropriate descriptive method. Everyone has put their foot it in in some way or other. This is just another instance of JLaw proving that she’s one of the most human celebs there is.

But what do you think? Let us know in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.
