It’s 2018, and every year New York Fashion Week comes and takes the fashion industry by storm. If you are not a fashion guru or don’t know what is going on within the world of fashion, NYFW is a big deal for designers, models, bloggers, magazines and anyone who wants to break out into the industry. Designers from across the globe come to New York Fashion Week to either debut their first collection, debut their upcoming Fall collections of that particular year or celebrate a milestone year of their brand’s existence. It is without a doubt that NYFW is one of the meccas where dreams come true.

New York Fashion Week 2018 is held in New York, New York from February 8th through the 16th. There are over 200 designers showcased and offer some opportunities for the general public to capture these moments. Some designers who are featured this year include Jeremy Scott, LaQuan Smith, Zimmermann and many others debuting their Fall/Winter 18 collections. What is so unique about NYFW, is that each designer has a different approach to releasing their collection. Some designers use the city as inspiration or their venue for people to capture. Others will use their own fashion house as their headquarters to illustrate where the collection began; or use certain architectural pieces that represent the muse used for that collection. Nonetheless, NYFW is a place of unlimited opportunities for anyone who aspires a career in the industry.

According to Fashionista.com, there will be 10 designers making their debut this season. Here are a few of them:

Bottega Veneta

Stuart Weitzman

Alice McCall

Juicy Couture

Along with group shows that will host independent designers from select cities like Vancouver, Oxford, Asia and Nolcha.

New designers are breaking barriers and creating trends that will either make their way back into the stores or be an influence for upcoming designers for their collections. Here are some trends and must-watch during NYFW:

Michael Kors’ Love Letter to NYC- “Kors always-anticipated show pays homage to the Big Apple. From the venue—the Vivian Beaumont Theater at the Lincoln Center—to the invitations and artwork….the show is taking a bow to Kors adopted hometown” because he believes everyone has their personal New York story where they’re inspired by the architecture, food, fashion etc.

Alexander Wang’s Last Show During New York Fashion Week- “Wang announced that this February would be his final time showing during the traditional New York Fashion Week shows. Moving forward, the designer will present two collections a year in June and December to better align with his production schedule. His final show will be showcased in Times Square.”

Street Style Starter Pack-“Expect grandpa sneakers, fanny packs an shearling coats to take over as the reigning trends of the street style scene in New York.”

Black Panther Gets the NYFW Treatment- “In honor of the highly-anticipated Black Panther movie, Marvel Studios tapped seven designers to create looks inspired by the film’s fashion. CHROMAT, Cushnie et Ochs, Fear of God, Ikré Jones, Laquan Smith, Sophie Theallet and Tome each designed one-of-a-kind pieces influenced by themes and characters of the movie. The looks will be unveiled at “Welcome to WAKANDA”, an immersive event held on February 12 in the midst of NYFW.”

All in all, New York Fashion Week is anyone’s dream of making it big in facets of fashion and there are countless opportunities to network industry professionals. As an inspiring designer, one of my biggest goals is to debut my collection during NYFW and one day it will occur.
